Re Read:
Wouldn't do anything now but once he starts to pick it up a bit, I'd seriously consider moving him for a comparable LW. Gotta think there is some team thats deep on the left side but thin on the right that would be looking for that kind of deal. - BiggE
I would. I also think Raffl can fill in for what Read does. But the offer would have to be right |

I don't think it is "what have you done for me lately". I think it has to do with skill set and value. Also he doesn't have no trade protection. If this team is out of it or close to that at the TDL you have to look at Read as a trade chip. He would have value to a team looking for depth for the playoffs. He is 28 so it is not like I am sending a young prospect off. I think Read will be more useful in a package deal. Adding value to the deal to get more then just what you would get alone - J35Bacher
If it has to do with skill set and value, then Read should be on the untouchable list. And in my opinion, Read isn't a player that you throw in on a deal. |

That would be a mistake in my opinion. Can always get a LW in free agency. Or trade from the surplus of defenseman for a LW. |

Why? I think his void could be filled with Raffl once he is ready.

Read is a nice player, but calling him untouchable is just ridiculous. The only true untouchables are Giroux and Voracek, though Mason, Couturier, B Schenn and Simmonds are close. The only other untouchables in the organization currently, IMO, are top prospects and 1st and 2nd round draft picks |

And I get it. But if I get an offer that is big I might have to take it. This team is still a couple years away. Just like how Hartnells game didn't lend itself to getting better with age you have to then look at Simmonds like that. But again the offer has to be in BRYZ term"houmungus BIG"
Just an example:
STL offers 1st rounder, Ty Rattie, Ivan Brabashov and Patrick Bergland
CGY offers !st rounder, Sam Bennet, Patrick Seilof, Max Reihart
I mean those are some interesting packages. Thats the type of deal I am saying when i say yes to trading him - J35Bacher
How old is Simmonds, 26 or 27? Hartnell was 32. I don't agree that it's the same situation. |

He wasn't called an untouchable. The poster commented that he would trade Read based on skill set and value. The point is that Read's skillset and value is a reason not to trade him. Rather then trade him. |

I think untouchable was only used in the context of using Read as a throw in. He's a better player than that, you don't just toss him in like some late round pick to sweeten the deal. |

And who would fill the Raffl void. Read and Raffl are two players. One player doesn't replace two. They need both, not just one. They need more two way players like Read and Raffl, not less. |

I didn't use him in the context of throw in. I said he added more value to the deal. |

Just to pile on the Brayden Schenn love this am.
He is doing everything Hartnell was supposed to do as the #1 LW.
Especially on the forecheck. He is getting in on really good defenseman and causing turnovers and creating havoc. He has a physical game and chippy game like Hartnell too. The first PowerPlay unit looks as good with Schenn as it did with Hartnell, maybe better at times.
Raffl was fine there, but Schenn has a better natural shot then Raffl.
I am very encouraged by his recent play |

Have to watch it if you can. He was tremendous. And you'll be raving at how Laughton played also. - MJL
I can't believe how well he played last night. I watched him live this season as a Phantom and he didn't stand out as much as he did last night. He was fast, aggressive, and determined. He made LeCavalier look better too. Would love to see Raffl replace Umberger on this line.

I think they really do need a LW, but read is not the guy I'd move at this point. Agree with the sentiment that he shouldn't be judged solely on a few games this season, but rather the body of work over three seasons.
Also, everyone is quick to point out that Couturier is being handcuffed by so many OZS. But Read's production also hinges on the center he is playing with and the role of the line he is on. Berube clearly wants Read and Couturier in that shut-down role. If Read had an opportunity to play LW with G and Jake instead of VdV or Schenn, I suspect he'd put up some points as well.
The last goal last night was squarely on him though, even more than AMac in my mind. He didn't pick up his man. |

Oh I totally agree, I cant decide between that trade or the Sharp trade as being the worst trade in recent years.....maybe my order would be this-
Worst recent trades-
1- JVR for Schenn
2- Sharp for Ellison
3 - Hartnell for Umberger
4 - Gagne for Walker
5 - 1st for Eminger
6- Scotty Upshall for Carcillo
God we are terrible at trading - Jack-Meoff
I wouldn't remotely put 1 before 2, 4 or 5. While Schenn hasn't been what was hoped and JVR is doing well, Schenn has played well at times. Ellison was a total wash. Walker was always hurt (and yes i get that was a salary cap trade), Eminger was moved right away. honestly I only cared about the Carcillo/Upshall deal because the Flyers included a 2nd rounder which was ridiculous. |

See your thinking today. I am thinking tomorrow and so on. I started by saying if this team is out of it at the TDL. if that is the case then i use these pieces to bring in valuable peices to build with and picks. This team is still 2-3 years from making noise in the playoffs. I would use almost all players except giroux, voracek, Schenn and couturier and our d prospects to bring in players and picks to build the team i want. Again the offers have to be right. |

Im down with that, I just feel that if you are going to use VLC as a RW, it might not be a bad idea to swap Read for a natural LW with an equivalent skill set.
Schenn-G-Jake
New LW-Couturier-Simmonds
Raffl-Laughton-VLC
VDV-Bellemare-Rinaldo
Right now I'd play Velveeta over the Corpse which pretty much says it all in regards to Umberger |

I'm not one of those people who think Hartsy is unskilled, but I don't think he would have had the vision and touch to make that back pass to find G there:

There is a famous cocktail served in bars around the world called corpse reviver #2. It contains gin, lemon juice, and absinthe. It is a hair of the dog type remedy for hangovers. The Flyers now have their own version of the corpse reviver, except it's #49.

I'd bench and eat Vinny's entire cap hit before I'd trade somebody like Read on account of him. And to reiterate, I could see many scenarios where it would make perfect sense to trade Read... but a move to accommodating Vinny would pretty much be my Swingline stapler moment. |

It was a thing of beauty. He was making those little touch passes in all three zones last night. Really loved Schenn's game last night. Giroux also had a tremendous effort last night.I was sitting in the sixth row and could really see how hard he was working. To me he is a great captain. Leading by example. |
