No its not all his fault. I just dont think we need him. I think the other D-men have played well enough (considering what we have) to justify trading Coburn for other needs. I mean Coburn was outplayed in pre-season by rookies.... So he isnt some stud. He has qualities that are better than some of our D-men but others also have qualities better than some of his and have filled in just fine in his absence. - GOA88
If we're using preseason as a measuring stick, then the Capitals' best defenseman is playing junior hockey in Kelowna. |

No. My talk of trading them is because I don't feel this team is good enough and I see them as assets that could help make our team better. They could bring prospects or picks that help build this team as the prospects start joining the big club. - J35Bacher
I don't agree with that. I think Read is a very valuable player that we need to keep, unless absolutely blown away with a deal. Picks and prospects are great. But aren't automatic. |

What would Coburn have to do for the remainder of this season up to the TDL to make you not want to trade him? |

I'm also using the regular season. He has sucked balls and everyone knows it. Maybe its because of rust? IDK. |

It's the same thing as Matt Carle, although Coburn is more physical and less offensively gifted. The guy will play a really good, solid game, and then there's 1-2 glitches and out come the pitch forks. If you play the hard minutes against the better players, then there's more of a chance that you will get beat, and when you do get beat there's a better chance it's a goal against, so it stands out brightly. People expected too much of Carle, and expect too much of Coburn. - jmatchett383
And there's also comparing defenseman to one another. When they're playing different roles, different situations, and against different level of competition. It's like when Lauridsen was up when the Flyers had all those injuries. All of a sudden, he could replace Grossmann and Schenn. |

All the recent talk of trading Coburn and Read is just due to reactionary faction of the fanbase looking at a small slice of games, rather then the big picture. - MJL
I think if this team is going to make the playoffs like you think they will, they have to make a deal or two. Coburn would not be wise as he is technically our #1.
I don't know what deals are out there to be had but this team could use more energy and physical play.

Well, I'm not sure what his sexual activities have to do with his on-ice play, but I don't think he has. He's not a "dynamic" or "exciting" player. He'll never stand out. I think he's done a fair job. And yes, I'm giving him some leeway due to injury. |

We need about 10 more Rinaldo's. He tries hard, and he hits. |

Or it is the realization that this team is going nowhere (ie not a serious cup contender) for a long time and those two players will overpaid and way past their prime by the time this team turns around. If you want to make trades to help the team in the future those two are the best to do it. |

2g 5a in 18 games.
He's a solid player but he is not someone I consider a real scoring threat. His best attribute is defense. - GOA88
I think you should look at some of the facts that you talked about earlier. Read plays against top lines, in a high percentage of defensive zone situations. Yet still scores 20+ goals, and 2nd line forward point totals at ES, but yet he's not a a real scoring threat. Are you kidding me?
And the 2g 5A in 18 games makes my point. Small slice of games. |

I don't think there is anything he can or cant do. My thought process is that come TDL if we are on the oustide of the playoff race he becomes a very attractive asset. So does Read. A team trying to make a run who wants to solidy their d and good depth forward would overpay for Coburn and Read. I was using an example like WPG. WPG needs to bolster their d and add a top 9 forward. Want to make a big playoff push. They offer 1st rounder and Nikoja Ehlers and rights to Burmistrov for Coburn and Read. Your telling my you say no? |

He's had two 20+ goal seasons. He averages 23 goals and 23 assists per 82 games in his career. |

Mason is not among the elite. But after that, as good as anybody. I think he's a really good starting goaltender. That the Flyers can win with. - MJL
I agree. The wins column isn't the end all, be all but I don't like that our starter is still catching up with our back up during the middle of our second month into the season. This is why I'm unsatisfied. I want him to steal a game. I want to see a statement game where he doesn't crack first and absolutely carries the team on his back for a game. He is the starter. I'm not asking for Emery to take over. I just want a little bit more. |

I know what he's done in the past. He has done well but Read is not technically top 6. That would be Simmonds and anyone on his line and the Giroux line. Couts and Read are a shutdown line... Not your traditional scoring line 1 & 2. I would never put Read on the ice over Simmonds when looking for a goal. Thats how I view it.
Anyways... I'm leaving work. Everybody have a safe and fun weekend and GO FLYERS! |

He does a lot of unnoticeable things that really help the team. He forces dump ins and stands people up at the blue line better than any defenseman on the roster. - PhillySportsGuy
Agreed
Coburn is not the problem. Forcing Coburn to be the units top dman though is a problem. |

You want to trade Coburn and Read for a 1st, a guy who's point production has regressed this season in the QMJHL, and the rights to a guy who may never play again? Yes, I'm saying no.
Now, if the return was Josh Morrissey or Petan + 1st, then yes.
But the deal you proposed is like offering a 1st, Nick Cousins, and the rights to Erik Gustafsson for a Coburn + Read package. |

He did this in the last game but it's few and far between imo. Actually I think Grossmann's ability to close the gap and stand opponents up at the blueline is superior.
I'm not a Coby hater, but he can be frustratingly inconsistent. When he plays with snarl and confidence, he's more of an impact player and earns his pay...the other 70 games he's kind of meh imo. I would think twice before re-upping his deal with a significant raise (as of after) next season. I wish we had seen his career arc continue along the path it appeared to be going in the first season or two after he got here...he looked to have all the makings of a 40 point, two-way/all situations D man. Not sure what happened to his offense. Some point to the puck to the face in 08 as a turning point, some think he was coached into a more defensive role...whatever it is, the drying up of that side of his game makes him a less valuable player. |
