Ok, so I want to pick up on TWG's post from page 2 without copying and pasting. He referenced the strategy of tanking and the great job the Sabres are doing and the fact that other GM's and owners are concerned about what the Sabres will become.
I say this assuming we won't even get Mcdavid, they should be afraid. The NHL loved the mediocre Sabres. An amped up American NHL market that drove TV ratings and revenues, while not threatening to derail any big markets cup ambitions or injure and darling superstar along the way.
Just enough star power in Ryan Miller to make them relevant, but not enough that they had to make any exceptions. Lucic runs over Miller? Oh well Sabres you should have been tougher. Get tougher with John Scott?
The league will remove him from the ice for talking and punish him in other ways never seen before in the history of the NHL. But hey Sabres fans, keep buying those tickets. Keep being a top rating market for us in the US, you're so close, we swear.
But what if they said "(frank) it"? (frank) these mediocre semi-stars? Lets do what Boston, LA, Pittsburgh and Chicago did-----SUCK!
When Pittsburgh got Crosby and Malkin it was nostalgic of the early 90's Pens with Lemiux(we wouldn't want to pass up a chance to re-kindle that would we?). With Boston, Chicago and LA these were not only old school markets but BIG tv markets that BARLEY touched thier potential(unlike Buffalo)
Point: It needs to be our time. We are more than overdue for our time. There is no point in having a league if everyone can't win. Deal with it NHL. - Buffalo-Sabres
This is great, and I love the attitude, but unfortunately, Buffalo will always be second in TV ratings for hockey and football no matter who is good and playing.
Unless I missed the point which is quite possible right now, lol |

My point is very conspiracy theoristic in nature. That the league loved the mediocre Sabres. Like the donkey with the carrot dangled in front of its face, that we as a city would keep keep the market amped up without derailing the leagues darling teams or having to take a gross ratings hit by "having" to have us in a Stanley cup. |

So the Sabres were a top team coming out of the 04 lockout? Perfect. Act as a catalyst to give the NHL a much needed jump start in an American market when they need it most. Them we'll watch you slowly wilt into mediocrity while being a thorn in the side of only the Maple Leafs. A mega Canadian market that will sell tickets no matter what.

Note this is not directed at you, Buffalo-Sabres:
It seems like everyone on this board has a "the world is against us" attitudes, including conspiracy theories. Look, i understand that buffalo has never won a cup but to come on here and shout stuff like the "lottery is fixed" and "they wont let buffalo win a cup". The one year we end up last and lose out on the first draft pick were so quick to call fixed when in fact there was a 75% chance to lose it. Bottom line is that if buffalo had the right coaching, GM, owner and (kept) the right players we would have had the cup. Theres no secret illuminati and 9/11 goverment groups telling chris stewart and cody hodgson to not score goals |

I don't think the conspiracy theories come from the fact that we lost the lottery, but the fact that as soon as we look first overall pick bad, the league had to so hastily change the format of the draft lottery. Combine that with the history of things like the Lucic incident, "No Goal" and other happenings, I don't think you can blame the Buffalo fan for being paranoid. Just picture any other market in our shoes. Imagine what the narrative would be. |

No i cant blame them, but its a loser attitude. I dont mind the change in the lottery and it was probably long over due. None of this losing on purpose bullpoop will fly anymore. Plus, the biggest change is happening AFTER the year the sabres are considered to be tanking. Buffalo fans know no different, but saying its never going to happen because they said so is a lame excuse. Its like somebody saying they cant become a doctor/lawyer because they werent put in the right situation. Thats bs, you do whatever it takes to achieve your goal whatever it may be. You go out there, pound bodies, scores goals, and win a damn championship. |

Buffalo is a near perfect market for hockey in my opinion. Whats the sabres waiting list for seasons at now?- several hundred people, some for several years. Tv ratings are great. People here love hockey and love the sabres. The league doesnt need to help us anymore (especially since pegula took over). There are markets where things arent so good, i have no idea why bettman was so hellbent on expanding into the sunbelt, but i am pretty sure that i saw his vinegar strokes right after brett hull scored with his foot in the crease. The league doesnt need to help us, doesnt owe us anything, and pretty obviously disapproves of our gameplan for acquiring the top end talent we need to break the Neverending cycle of mediocrity. The lottery should not be taking place behind closed doors.

Ryan Miller, Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott were on the Sabres roster to start last season. After they are traded for draft picks then the tank was on, then the rules were changed. I never read one article from any respectable sports writer calling for the lottery to be changed nor can I recall comments from any GM prior to that asking for a lottery change. Cited sources are welcome.
Of course I have a loser attitude as a Buffalo sports fan. What else is there to have? Go ask other fans how they would feel. I can't imagine they would say anything but losers. But I'm not a loser of a person. Sure anyone who works hard could become a doctor. But that's their life. That's something they have some level of control over. I have zero level of control over my local sports teams on field play or front office decisions. But my heart is with them(albeit illogically) so therefore I have a "loser attitude". |

3 wins in a row huh? Its nice to see but the wrong buffalo team has the win streak right now wtf. Also, Edmonton should be banned from the 2015 draft wtf is this crap. If they get the first overall you can bet Myers and all 3 firsts are headed their way. |

It's also funny to me that people don't see how good he is, and was last season.
Yet Nikita Zadarov is the next big thing? Why because he hit someone that one time? - sbroads24
Do I think Myers is a good player? YES!
Do I think he makes players around him better? NO!
There is the issue.

I hope I'm wrong,
But I never see him being better than a good 2nd pair guy
He just doesn't have that consistent shut-down ability in his own end, and his physical play is far too scattered
Not that I think he sucks...
I just don't see this potential Norris trophy winner that some others do |

Shutdown ability is overrated in today's game, IMO. It's much more important to be driving possession. |

I don't agree . How many points did Ovechkin get last night ? Whenever Ovechkin got the puck in our end it was Myers that was on him . He got no real attempts close to our goal . It is amazing how you guys don't watch things like this. Myers plays against the other teams top players every night . And on the whole is very effective shutting them down with little or no help from our forwards . But The Myers haters in here do no see that . They only dwell on the few mistakes or possible mistakes . It is like they only watch the game to see if they can catch him making a mistake and do not recognize any of his good play.
- Maximum Signal
Obv we don't agree
Go fight with someone else
Lmk when Myers becomes the Norris trophy candidate
Btw... Ekblad looks pretty damn good. And yes, I still think he'll be better than Myers. Actually, a case can be made that he already is |
