Eakins hasn't panned out and I agree. About the signings, I disagree. His signings with the exception of Nikitin were solid and he can be more criticized for what he didn't do about the centre situation.

I think the idea is two-fold:

If that haul gets you a #1 dman, the oilers are much much better.

If the team takes it as a form of motivation that they're not interested in another prospect, it can be a move that brings sea change in terms of team culture.

Even if it adds up to the Oilers giving up a 4th overall, I'll take it.

He's made some strides in his defensive game. Still not the best but it has improved. Second line scoring center is what he will be throughout his career.
