maybe - JoeRussomanno
Maybe what? It's subjective. Some deals are obviously bad, because of how they turned out, such as the Bryzgalov signing. But calling the MacDonald deal a bad deal is completely subjective.

He was the GM of the team for 7 seasons. Every GM is going to have blemishes on his record. And just because you think the MacDonald deal is a bad deal, doesn't make it one. Not to mention that your list omits a lot of factors in why some deals were made. Such as the Upshall deal. And deals such as the Gagne deal was a choice. And Walker was easily buried in the minors. And it allowed the Flyers to make the moves they want to make. Some fans have never grasped that certain types of moves are necessary with a salary cap. It's what the cap is all about. And what it's supposed to do.
As if a team all of a suddenly wakes up and they're up against the cap. As if they weren't counting cap dollars as they went along, and they said oh crap, we're up against the cap! If and when a team is up against the cap, it's because they willingly put themselves there. - MJL
Could you imagine if the NHL never agreed to a compliance buyout?
I shudder to think about it. |

No need to think about it. It happened, and the Flyers moved on. And Holmgren acquired Mason. And they have a quality goaltender.

I can't answer if the Flyers would be willing. But I wouldn't make that deal. |

No it isn't. Lecavalier isn't going to define what happens to this team.

I think the current situation is just temporary. I still think they have a solid core of players, and some good prospects on the way. And I think this team will be a top team in a few years. They may or may not be able to salvage this season, depending on how quick they come out of it, and how well they play when they do. But I still like the core of this team.

if they do make a lateral shakeup move, this is likely the type it would be. i can see why people could be on either side of it. no wrong answer per se. |

Arizona is likely going to be looking for a young forward in exchange for Boedker. I don't see them interested in Read.

Might not gain a ton of flexibility. Boedker saves them only around $1.1mm this season, and who knows where he'll be next season? |

At the very least, Boedker will cost 2.8M next year.

Fingers crossed that two (is three asking too much?) of the d-men hopefuls will make positive contributions in the near future, but that in and of itself still wouldn't guarantee a successful team.
They are still in dire need of secondary scoring. Unless this team all fall on their respective heads and suddenly wake up, or another system is put into pace that tailors to their strengths, the future doesn't look as bright on offense. There are no 1st or 2nd line scoring wingers in the pipeline. |

true, but he is another younger plyr w/ speed and maybe a change is needed. now if they took one of our questionable contracts like grossman or AMac and we get a pick or more cap room as a result, that's a new dynamic. not holding my breath on that last part tho.
FWIW, i'd rather just keep read and let him play himself out of funk. prob needs to separate from Couts at this point though. |

This team had 7 20 goal scorers last year. One of them, Hartnell, is gone. And Lecavalier doesn't look like he could score a single goal, let alone 20 right now. But there is still plenty of offensive talent on this team. They have two offensive stars in Giroux and Voracek. Simmonds has put up first line scoring numbers in the past. Schenn is breaking out offensively. Hopefully players like Read and Couturier pick it up offensively. As well as players like Laughton and Raffl adding offense. Too many players in slumps right now.

RJ's a buyout waiting to happen and Nic is prob gone by TDL for a pick, so that's ~ 6 MM off cap nxt yr. VL is an anchor. only way out of that mess is to make a bad hockey trade because cap space is the more desired asset. no easy answers as homer's mess is a big smelly dump. |

Giroux, Voracek, Simmonds, B Schenn, Laughton, Raffl, Couturier, Read. Yea, that's a big smelly dump all right. That's not to mention the top D prospects such as Morin and Gostisbehere.
Who the Flyers deal at the trade deadline, depends on where they are in the standings.

I'd consider keeping them together if Bellemare got moved up to the line, bury one stiff on the 4th line, waive the other and send him to Lehigh Valley to ride the buses. Of course, they could move Simmonds with Couturier and Bellemare and slide Read with Laughton and Raffl.
They have options up front, and this is where my criticism of Berube comes from, I think the options he chooses are poor ones. We continuously see one or both of Umberger or Lecavalier end up getting top 9 minutes. |

They need something to snap them out of this funk - perhaps a classic line brawl like the one against Ottawa, or the one many moons back in Vancouver which gave birth to the Broad Street Bullies. Not to re-create that style of play, but to rally the team around each other and for them to begin to play with a chip on their shoulders again.
They're like watching The Walking Dead.
Hell, If Pat Quinn could coax career years out of Bathe, Busniak, and Barnes, a roll the team to it's 35 game unbeaten streak, certainly this crew could put up at least respectable numbers. |

There are only so many choices. He has to play what he has available to him. No matter what moves Berube makes, you are going to criticize him for it.
