Are you just going to gloss over the points I made about individual influence winning out over competing contextual factors over a large enough sample size?
Your position is that these things are somehow unknowable. My position is that they are knowable, their impact is quantifiable, and when you control for those usage factors, MacDonald still drastically under performs.
- AndrewD
How am I glossing over it? It all starts with the data. If the data is flawed, then it is impossible for individual influence to win out over contextual factors, over a large enough sample size. A larger sample size could result in a larger amount of false data being applied to a player. It is absolutely unknowable. Did you even read the last article you linked?
Not "the worst". But one of the worst regular starters in the league for sure.
With this large of a sample size, there isn't this magical false data muddying the water. MacDonald has been awful.
His benching was 100% warranted. - AndrewD
That's just a random opinion that is obviously biased by flawed stats. And the water is badly muddied.
What do you think would happen to the numbers if MacDonald was traded to the LA Kings, and was inserted into the lineup on the 2nd pair to replace Voynov?
As far as the benching, there are only a few players on this team currently that should be immune from benching. So I don't see that as an indicator of a players long term worth. I think he has struggled some coming back from the injury. Bu like all of the defenseman, they are playing in a tough situation, especially for defenseman. It's a hard enough position to play, even when there is good team support and structure. Bottom line for me is that MacDonald is a solid #3 puck moving defenseman that improves this team long term. And I'm glad to have him. |

You seem to always argue against the stats that show Amac sucks. Care to provide some evidence that shows he's good? |

The best way to tell how good a player is, it to watch the game.

I agree, and when I watch Flyers games, I see Amac commit terrible turnovers, have terrible gap control, lose inside position, and be directly responsible for multiple goals. |

So, the team is bad, or at least underachieving. We cant blame the old GM, because he made some good moves. We cant blame the new GM, because despite the rampant rumors of a probable buyout, he had no idea how bad Umberger would be. We cant blame the coach, because he can only play the guys he has. Finally, when a player gets blamed, hes not the problem or isnt a core player.

Since the coach decided to bench him, this seems the more accurate view of the player. |

Demonstrating that you have little to no understanding of how contextual influences change over time with regards to on ice results.
What do you think would happen to the numbers if MacDonald was traded to the LA Kings, and was inserted into the lineup on the 2nd pair to replace Voynov?
Probably the same thing that happened to Robyn Regeher. His raw corsi would improve thanks to the better team, better linemates, but his performance relative to his teammates would either remain just as poor or drop even further.
And we could account for those factors and adjust our evaluation.

So who gets benched for the next game? I'm guessing Vinny, Carlo and Schenn. |

In the previous game, the same coach played MacDonald for 20+ minutes and was second only to Streit among all defenseman in ice time. So which situation should we use to determine the accurate view of the player? The one that suits our agenda?

The day he scratches Vinny and Umberger will be watershed moments, because the Flyers have to break the fever of allowing bad players "to play through it"
Once he scratches those two, then the toxicity will be released and the Flyers can move on. Nothing will be right with this team, when you're preaching accountability, until you scratch one or both |
