The problem is that you have to give to get, and very few teams have the appetite for "deficit spending" anymore

Better to hoard assets for a future that may never come instead of a present where you might lose a deal

- AllInForFlyers

with this team playing this way, i see it hard pressed to lose a deal. i think some of these players are a bit overvalued

I think they miss Timonen in particular.

Never too early. They're going to be heading to the podium in the first half hour
- Jsaquella

Sadly, things have to change quickly if that isn't going to be true

I'm so torn on this -- my head knows they really need a high-end prospect, maybe two, in the forward ranks

But my heart knows that every loss they sustain in getting there makes me sad

Their motto needs to be sell, sell, sell. Acquire as many picks as possible while shedding as many bad contracts as possible. At this point, I'd be willing to move Coburn to a contender for just a 2nd round pick if that team takes Umberger or VLC in the deal.

It's possible they can turn it around, but with each passing day, the odds seem longer and longer. I absolutely do not want a deal that just makes them better now. They need to keep their eyes on the long term, not next spring.

Always baffled at how players get overvalued. Yes, I get undervalued. People can take players for granted that they've seen for awhile

How people overvalue players who aren't helping you win is baffling to me

Its not even the on ice play. Its every guy on the bench watching the oldest, smallest guy on the team take a crushing hit, block a shot, come limping back to the bench, and go right back out for his next shift and do it all over again.

I've been expecting them to miss the playoffs since July, so it's not really a stunner to me. I'm not really torn, I just hate to see a Flyers team suck. Transitional year. Enjoy the good, bemoan the bad. Roll with the punches.

The spring for sure, their long term future looks fine though. They've established a nice group of D prospects and will hopefully land an impact forward with this years first

I think the future is pretty bright, actually. There's a plan in place, the last two drafts have yielded good players and they do have some good trade chips to add more picks. If they can continue to add picks and draft smart, they'll be fine

Well, if they're gonna miss the playoffs, I'd rather they suck than just miss out and end up with the 13th or. 14th pick

Gotta get a roster player or higher-end prospect for Coburn, I feel

Bury Umberger in the minors before you lessen Coburn's value, I think - I hate that contract with the intensity of 1,000 suns, but I'd "Matt Walker" his ass before I took less for Coburn just to shed two years

Now Vinny, because of the NMC...that's another conversation entirely. You get a chance to move that, yeah, you maybe have to do that

I'll understand if they find a way to do it. Won't love it, but will understand it

i guess we were spoiled with young and up and coming players like richards abd carter making us insta contenders, lindros/leclair/brind'amour before and evenbefore that keenan led team of the 80's... its going onthree years now with this group of young untradables that we dont have the playoffs locked up before new years eve. they've had flashes of greatness but those other teams i mentioned always were held back perceivably by goaltending... thats clearly not the case now... so yea, theres someseripus over valuing going on these days.

That's where the fence bisects my ass cheeks. I know it's better if they suck. but it injures my soul when they do.

I like the idea of burying Umberger, though not necessarily in the minors

Yeah, it does suck. I console myself by focusing on Giroux, Voracek, Mason and the kids.

And lots and lots of drinking

I've come to the point where I've realized that you just can't contend in this league anymore by constantly mortgaging the future. The Kings, Hawks, B's... They all had to go through a couple of rough seasons to get where they are. Our core is relatively young. If this is that year so be it.

If they turn it around great. The only thing I don't want to see is bandaiding the team to the 15th overall pick.

At least it isn't like 2007, where nearly every pundit was candid in saying that draft year sucked

If you're gonna bottom out, I...guess...this...is...the...year...to...do...it

Gah -- it pains me to even type it
