So what? Umberger's in his second straight year of bad play. Lecavalier is in his second straight-a lot of folks would argue third straight-season of poor play.

I don;t give a rat's ass what they did 4 years ago. I care that right now, when they are on the ice, either together or apart, the Flyers are getting outshot and outchanced at a higher rate than when they are not on the ice.

That's not conductive to winning hockey. I'd rather see Akeson get a chance to prove or disprove he can be a NHL player than see Lecavalier skating lazy circles collecting a check or Umberger blowing coverage or icing the puck two strides before he hits the red line.

And with that, folks, I'm outta here. Study and maybe sleep time. Pretty much the name of the game until next friday. "Study and maybe sleep"

Blair Jones made the team and was sent down.

They signed Vincent Lecavalier to a massive free agent deal and now he's playing the 4th line and in danger of being scratched.

Guys have been sent down and recalled before.

Dude, I couldn't care less if Umberger and Lecavalier were shipped out of here for nothing. I thought Hartnell for Umberger was a bad deal the second it happened. My stance has never wavered since the deal was announced. I know if they were both traded, it's within the best interest of the team. With this said, scratching them but still expecting them to be traded is beyond silly to me. I often wish I could rub the lamp next to me and hope a genie will pop out and grant me 3 wishes but it's not gonna happen.

Our depth players are also junk.

Then you don't understand what I'm saying.

Whether they play Umberger and/or Lecavalier, or not, it's highly unlikely that they will be able to trade either player, without adding in another asset, like a draft pick or eating a significant amount of money

If they scratch them both, then obviously there's no trade value. Nobody is likely to agree to assume several seasons of high salaries and cap hits for a guy who can't play on a bad team.

If they play them, other teams will be able to see just how poorly they are playing, and again, will be unlikely to be willing to assume several seasons of high salaries and cap hits for players who are just flat out horrible.

If you think that playing them more will increase their trade value, then I have to ask if you've watched them play? If I thought increased ice time or slotting them with more skilled guys would up the chances of a trade, I'd be all for it. But it won't.

My suggestion is, instead of tying a box of rocks around your neck and drowning in some half assed attempt to drum up value for Vinny or Umberger, why not see if Akeson can be an effective third liner? Or if Jones can be an effective 4th liner?

If you're going to lose anyhow, what's the harm? Still gonna be stuck buying out Umberger or Vinny or ending up having to deal an asset along with them or eat money to get rid of them.

Because nobody outside of the top line has been effective! It's not just one or two or even three players. It's everyone! The entire team as a unit isn't playing well, so bringing names like Jones and Akeson to me is moot!

So, since nobody outside the top line has been effective, just keep rolling the same guys out and pray to Jesus, Allah and Buddha that they magically cure themselves or play well enough that Hextall doesn't have to take a complete bath when he deals them.

Superb plan

You spent the second half of last season harping that Grossmann couldn't possibly get better and now he's an important part of the defense today! The point I've already made about Lecavalier already this season is, he hasn't played with other talented players, much like the points made about Akeson. At the same time, I don't discount the fact that he should sit. Fine! If you want to sit him, sit him! If we don't get better, then what? You get the satisfaction of being right but still getting nowhere?

You're on the A list for planning yourself. We don't have a good team right now regardless! If you think Blair Jones, Jason Akeson or Chris Vandevelde will make a huge difference, you give them more credit than I do.

maybe if actually gets a legitimate chance to go through some growing pains at the nhl level, he might. he's a (frank)ing rookie.

oh that's right, it's better to trot out vdv, jones and play the other schlock 15 minutes a night.

- hammarby31

Um, I meant I don't expect him to get a legitimate chance. Seems like they made their minds up already.

Did you even read a word I wrote? Where did I say that I thought Jones, Akeson or VandeVelde would make a big difference?

This is pointless, I'm done. No reason to have a discussion with you if all you're going to do is ignore what I post and then attribute things to me that I never said.

Our D is pretty bad, so I'm not sure that's a ringing endorsement of Grossmann.

I think the point is, we're losing already, Vinny and Umby stink, why not try something else?

Grossmann has been almost as bad as anyone else on the defense. he's hardly been a rock. He played well down the stretch last season, but this season he's struggled, especially on the PK.

He's not alone there. But he's not less culpable because the other guys have sucked.

I don't mind Grossmann. I think it's good to have a big body back there, but him and L Schenn are of a kind, and both seem to be in the 5/6 mold. Which is fine, you need those guys, we just seem to be heavy in the 4/5/6 area role right now. And yes, he's not exactly playing lights-out hockey.
