Elliot Friedman had some interesting things to say on Sportsnet radio about the Flyers:
http://www.nicholsonhocke...ughts-on-schenn-couturier
“The tough thing for there is he doesn’t have a lot that other people want. Nobody really wants to take Andrew MacDonald’s contract. Nobody really wants to take Vinnie Lecavalier’s contract. Philly knows if they want to move those guys, they’re probably going to have to eat a chunk."

Elliott is a smart guy, really one of the best in the national media.
He is saying what we have been saying on here for a while.
Very tough for Hextall to make any trades because of the unmovable contracts and the condition that to get a good piece you have to take an unwanted contract.
In the cap world who can afford a 4M multi year player that provides nothing?

I dont think you loose if your drafting top 5 this year - PhillaBully
This is our year for some luck. We will finish bottom five and yet still end up with 1st or 2nd pick. The lottery will be good to us due to our horrific season that we are about to experience.

Last I checked, Hartnell is still a productive top six power forward. He's big, gritty, plays physically, scores goals and even the advanced stats guys like him, because he's had good possession numbers over the past few seasons. - Jsaquella
He's having a rough season at ES. 9 points in 23 games and -12.
I still see the rationale for getting out from his deal. Umberger has just been way worse than I expected. |

He falls a lot though and takes too many penalties. He draws more than he takes but those are irrelevant stats filled with false data - PhillySportsGuy
I had a real love hate with Hartnell but honestly I get moving him. I really believe we would have been female doging about that contract in 2-3 years. I get that they wanted to unload long term salary/cap hit. I just wish they could have done better than Umberger and a 4th. maybe a 2nd rounder. |

Yes, I was talking as in "Least tradeable" to "Most tradeable." Where do you see them ranked as in most valuable to the Flyers in the future. - jmatchett383
Personally, as far as my favorites? Keep Ghost, Morin, and Sanheim. I really like Hagg and Alt, but I really think those first 3 are going to be the future of the Flyers.
Again, maybe wishful thinking, and maybe the NHL will render them ineffective when the time comes, but Morin plays big and smart(his biggest problem may be the speed of the NHL), Ghost honestly looked pretty good and smart in his first couple outings, and I think Sanheim will develop well and handle the transition.
Just my opinion though, obviously..
If I had to throw ranks out from most valuable future to least..
Morin
Ghost
Sanheim
Hagg

I had no problem with moving him. It was the return that annoyed me. Umberger was awful last season. It's like the scouts didn't pay attention. Plus, he's still on the books in two years when Couts, Schenn, Raffl, Coburn and Voracek all hit FA. It would have made more sense if Umberger was an expiring deal or expiring deal after next season. I just find it hard to believe that was the best they could have done. If that's the case, they should have just hung on to Hartnell |

As ridiculous as it may seem saying this now, I feel like Umby could still salvage his season to a degree. ~25 points, ~10 goals, in a bottom-six role.
Hartsy... hot start, but yeah, he's been really bad defensively for them all year.
Vinny I have zero hope for.

I think they always planned to buy out the last year. Where they screwed up was in thinking that Umberger could at least be a solid 3rd/4th line guy. At this point, he couldn't be an effective AHL 3rd liner. |

If Umberger was even remotely contributing in a positive fashion, I don't think anyone would be saying much of anything.
We knew Hartnell still was gonna do his thing; it's Umberger who many (myself included) felt could provide something....if nothing else, some versatility and responsible defensive play.
Umberger looks just plain lost. |

I really see Umberger as a standard buy-out candidate after this year. It's not an awful pill to swallow. |

We would have been screaming at the return at the time of the trade, but just taking the 4th round pick without RJ would have been way smarter. |
