He's under contract at 6 mil for next year as well. They're going to have to spend money, I'd rather they do it on a young forward who can play both ends of the ice than on some glorified fringe top 6 past his prime.

At this point I do not want to give assets up for him . After his contract next year he is a UFA . May be a good player but not 1 I would want to try and negotiate with.

Only if an extension is signed in advance of the trade . This guy has no loyalty to anyone but himself . Sure don't want send valuable assets for him and have nothing to show for it at the end of next season .

Tanking is only half the battle. There are 2 major problems with the oilers rebuild. 1 is when it came time to make the "tough choices" and big moves they wussed out. Upper management were far too attached to their assets and as a result they sat back and assumed it would all work out instead of being proactive. Kings had no problem shipping out two former top 5 picks when the time was right.

The other is that even with all the top picks, you still have to be able to hit on picks outside of the top 5. It doesn't even necessarily have to be 5th rounders like Shaw, but if you look at their drafting in the 1st round outside the top picks (particularly top 60) is mediocre at best.

I'm aware. Edmonton is pretty much the example of how not to run your organization. They can keep drafting 1st overall, but if they don't have a solid group of guys behind them, it's never going to get them anywhere.
