If this is how you feel why should the Oil be kicking themselves for not offering the vault for Schneider?
- Morris

Player value changes from season to season. When Schneider was available teams were getting good returns on trading goalies. Now, not so much.

A good GM understands the market place and reacts accordingly.

Aren't you in my pool? Yes he's actually been my best goalie but he's had some really bad games that screw my gaa
- Yeti1181

Nope. Pools just prove that I have no (frank)ing idea what I'm talking about

So by virtue of the fact that you think the Oilers should have traded for Schneider, you're admitting that anyone who followed that advice would be a bad GM.

Nope. At the time MacT would have been correct in paying for Schneider. Would have filled a glaring hole and a good goalie can build huge confidence in your young players. Instead MacT went the cheap route and his team has suffered for it.

Yo Morris.

Oduya, Boychuk, Green, Martin, Michalek, Erhoff, Staal, Beauchemin, Franson, Hejda, Jackman, Methot, Regehr, Sekera. Who, how many and would it help?

But when you look at it in hindsight - as you're looking at it right now - you're using the benefit of "what happened next" to assert that MacT made a wrong move. But "what happens next" cuts both ways. What happened next was that the market for goaltenders came way down, and demonstrated that the price that has at least been speculated MacT would have had to pay was a heck of a lot.

So from my perspective, the statute of limitations on criticizing for Schneider ran out when the market for goalies came down (as you just said it did). And if you want to criticize him for the goalies he's chosen to bring in during the low market period, go right ahead. I'm with you. But I don't think that has a ton to do with what happened when Schneider was available.

I think pretty much all of them would help. The help-cost ratio is the thing MacT seems to waffle about, but it's not like that's not a consideration at all.

But the ones I bolded I just plain like as players. I dunno if they'd fit that perfectly, but all of them can skate pretty well and most of them play pretty simple games. The kind of smarts we need are "poise" as opposed to "creativity".

We do need those types of smarts....but I want to see adequate more players with fire ( and skills) like Doan, Ott, Dubinski.....some bad tempers would be a good thing.

All things being equal, I think the Oilers are 5 players away from being a playoff team. 3-4 of them need to be far above average players for their role, and we don't have the cap room for them, but I think it's only about 5.

I'd love to get a middle centre that has that fire, and a defenseman that has that poise.

Whoever overpays for Foligno and Vermette will get two really great players that won't produce like that on a different team.
