What? I don't beleive that at all. We need to be a great team that contends for this last 10 years to be worth it, I don't know what your talking about, I never once made that claim.
And Draisaitl will be a 2C and Nurse will be a number #1 D, and we might even have a future starter in Brossoit...what's your point? You seem to be eager to make some assumptions about my stance. - Jeropotato
Wasn't trying to jump to any assumptions. I just started my diatribe with what we needed to get to be a playoff team. So I figured when you picked up on that thread that's the parameters we were talking about.
Here's what I think:
Hall-Nuge-Pitlick
Perron-XXXX-XXXX
Pouliot-Draisaitl-Purcell
Hendricks-Gordon-Pinizotto
XXXXX-Petry
XXXXX-Fayne
Ference-Schultz
XXXXX
Scrivens
Is about the talent level of most 'squeak into the playoffs' or 'ready to take the next step' sorts of teams.
We've got Marincin, Klefbom, Nurse and a smattering of forwards in the minors, a bit of cash to spend, and Eberle and Yakupov notably absent from the lineup. Can we fill those five holes?
- top pairing dman
- middle centre (long term 3C, short term 2C)
- goalie that has 50 competent games in him
- guy who can eat some minutes on the wing
- 2nd pairing guy who plays event-even minutes. |

I think at this point we have to stop calling Calgary a crummy team. Whatever demon monkey god Burke sacrificed to is much too powerful. - AdamFrench
I think they're incredibly hard working, they've got a good system going, and they've got defensive talent.
I guess what I'm saying is that if we had a guy like Gio, we'd be a lot better than where we are too. Guys play looser, and better than the sum of their parts when they've got elite players in the right roles.
Can you honestly say that any team is as bad against the field in any position as we are in defense? I think Calgary is mostly pretty ho-hum outside of Gio and I think they'd agree. That should give you an indication of how atrocious Edmonton is. |

54% of Calgary's goals are scored while Gio is on the ice. 52% of those goals, he has a point on.

Oh, sorry, I thought you were done. Maybe you and Buffet King can take this to the Nucks thread? - Jeropotato
You're not hiding out there tonight? I figured it made sense to talk about the Oilers in an Oiler thread. Oh well, wrong again. |

One thing I'll say to Calgary's credit: I have no idea what they'd be like without Gio, but I expect it'd be better than the oil
The Oilers players most often look like they're waiting for management to procure them a Giordano. The Flames play like they're ready to win with a Schultz-Schultz top pairing. |

Give TJ Brodie some love too ...he has been great
The key to the flames success beyond just hard work is their top 4 D ...they will jump into the rush at anytime and all have offensive ability ...but can also play good defensively ...wideman has his moments tho |

You can call him whatever you want the kid is not just riding gio's success as a D partner tho ....all the fancy stats geeks last year were saying how he was making all his D partners better than any other D man on Cgy |

Gio and Brody are the type of D-men who not only jump up but more often you will see both of them in the offensive zone deep and behind the goal line and the forwards being defensively responsible covering for them. Gio is great, Brody is great even without Gio. If you look at this team now and compare them to the Flames team after the Allstar break last season they are the same team. Biggest difference is they are scoring goals, lots of goals. This team isn't just Gio and Brody....Wideman, Russell, Monahan, Hudler, Johnny Hockey (I love that name), Byron and Jooris have been solid. Most of all, give credit where credit is do....Bob Hartley!! |

I'm pretty sure that is praise. As a fan of hockey I have to respect the Flames, they show up and never give up in any game. |
