Michael Pachla: I blame Kevin Devine and Darcy Regier as well as...
26th place after a 6-1-0 run has Sabres' fans in a bit of a quandary - Michael Pachla
Good read.
It all starts with Darcys decision to trade Gaustad. Once that happened you can follow the steps to where we are now.
Moulson, Ennise, Girgensons, Zadorov, Carrier, Neuiverth, Etc all follow the path that starts with Paul Gaustad and ends here.
Also, I think you will see a regression to the "Norm" soon. Bounces off of stantions and saves with Enroths back, (The lucky things) will not always happen. |

Tough break, hopefully they turn it round and get back into the loss column soon. |

If there is a goalie market now might be a good time to trade enroth while he is playing out of his mind. Either way I don't see buffalo winning many games after the trade deadline. |

Having a 'generational' talent isn't the key to winning the Cup. I mean, look at the Kings...Anze Kopitar (11th overall), Jeff Carter (11th overall), Toffoli (47th overall), Richards (24th), Jake Muzzin (147th), and o.k. Drew Doughty at 2nd overall.
Look at Washington with Ovie (1st overall) and Backstrom (4th), no cups...Pittsburgh has 1 with their (1st and 2nd overall) Malkin and Crosby, but seem like a longshot with out more depth. Chicago might be the best example of a "tank" with 2 Cups, but only with a lot of depth added around their (1st and 3rd overall) core.
Even if the Sabres get the 8th overall pick this year, we will be able to take comfort in the fact that were building a solid team, which is ultimately what we need. Ask the Oilers.

They traded two former top 5 picks to get those guys
And then there's that Doughty guy. I hear he's kinda sorta amazing.
Also with the 8th overall pick, we can take comfort in the fact that we once again lack the elite talent to compete with the big boys.
Drafting 4th would be tough enough, at 8th overall you probably won't get a game changer and the picks not necessarily valuable enough to trade for one. |

I would rather have a team of real good players instead of 1 superstar and the rest 2-4th liners |

Very intriguing blog Michael, very well written, yet again. I sit here with a similar view..should I be happy when they win? The team is forming an identity, and we're starting to see 1996 again. I don't want them to do well this year. I really don't. Because I don't think we have the talent to get anywhere in the playoffs. If we're going to lose, might as well lose hard. Some of these games are a little boring, but for some reason we're winning right now. I assume we will regress into something like the 28th position over the course of the season. Even if we can land 29th or 28th, we have almost as good a shot at McEichel as anyone. I guess I'll just enjoy the ride and daydream about how great this team will be in a few short years. |

I love people point out the outlier and not the norm.
The only way to get the top talent is to draft at the top. This will have been a waste if they signed a few street free agents to help us not be dead last.
I for one do not want to hear about how McDavid or Eichel have brought a team back to a frontrunner for years to come while the Sabres get a Bobby Ryan type player.
No slight against Ryan, he is good, he is not going to be the face of your franchise. |

no reason why we can't have both, in fact i'd argue in order for us to maintain any success that would be the key, a la chicago or LA |

So we seemingly already have the really good players in Zad, Risto, Myers, Pysyk, Armia, Grigorenko, Girgensons, Ennis, Moulson, Reinhart.
I want the guy that takes those guys to the next level. |

We will finish 29th. Win the lottery like the 2nd worst team has done the last two seasons.
Right now we are a one line team, with 2 really good defensemen and a hot goalie. It will start going the other way soon enough |

Calgary is making a run without "going full" ... so it's not the norm top get overall first picks to build. The Habs didn't either, neither the Bruins... Anaheim, St. Louis, ... not everyone has to suck for multiple years and get top picks stacked up to win... going the loser route to build might get your team twelve first overall picks like the oilers but the team is still shiite... |
