I agree. I like Coburn for what he provided when we paired with Kimmo or Pronger. He and Carle were excellent compliments to the two #1 Dmen. If we got Weber, Coburn would be a great pair with him. But with a year left on his contract, I think he's more valuable now than he will be next yr to attain assets for the future.

I don't think the team is making any noise anytime soon though and I want a lottery pick this summer, so that's where I'm coming from.

Not this year for sure. I'd personally like to keep Coburn. But I would not hesitate to trade him if I got a deal that I couldn't pass up. I'd like an young NHL ready asset as part of that return though.

Not only that, but I'm suggesting that a fire sale of Flyers defenseman isn't the way to go. Just by adding one or two defenseman on EL deals will sufficiently lower the cost of the defense.
- MJL

Even if they wanted to, it's very unlikely they'd be able to sell everybody off in one go. It's probably just gonna be a couple vets going this year, a couple of vets next year, etc.

And with contracts expiring, kids coming up on ELCs, things should look much better.

That's what I figured, that's why I mentioned my reasoning for trading Coburn now, as opposed to next season. Streit and MacDonald are locked up longer anyhow. So they could provide the holdover while lowering cost with prospects.

That's one solutions. So many variable. A prospect could come in and absorb big, tough minutes too, who knows. Can't count on it, of course. But who would've predicted Nick Shultz being an every in the lineup every night?

Hopefully we can make the smart signings like Raffl and Bellemare throughout the entire lineup, fwds and D.

Yeah, they're always going to have vets around to even out the mix.

Problem now is to find takers for some of these poopty contracts... or bend somebody over a barrel for a guy like Coburn who is actually worth something.

I think Columbus will slowly creep up in the standings. I see Edmonton at the very bottom, followed by Carolina, Buffalo, Flyers
- Streit2ThePoint

I think Buffalo is starting to get their act together...Ristolainen and Zadorov are beginning to acclimate and play big minutes, Girgensons is coming on and showing he can be dynamic, Myers is sarting to regain his earlier promising form...Enroth is a quality tender. They've won 6 out of 7 including a sweep of MON and most recently a W over TB. If I had to bet, I'd bet the Sabres will finish ahead of the Flyers.

Now you're talking...that's what I want to see happen. The lineup definitely needs balance of Vets and youth. Same balance is needed with skill sets, like we were saying earlier, some offensive D, some Defensive etc.

I think the revelation that Vinny is willing to retire in a year if he gets out of here increases the odds of a trade mightily. RJ will get bought out in July. Grab some picks for Coburn and Rinaldo at the deadline. I would look to get out of the Read contract as well if he doesn't return to form come the deadline.

Not so much a rebuild. But a definite retooling while the team is struggling and the core is young makes a lot of sense.

Hexy's gonna earn his salary, but if it was going to be easy, Homer wouldn't have been yanked.

Eww.. they're a 37% possession team. As much as I really believe the Flyers are bad, they're not THAT bad, lol.

Homer did a really nice job on the initial tear-down phase... seems to be easier to sell than it is to buy smartly. I think if Hexy gets the 2nd part right, he'll end up doing a lot better than his predecessor.

If you were a GM thinking about trading for Lecavalier. Would you put your money on counting on Lecavalier retiring early, and taking on that contract? I don't see the Flyers trading Rinaldo.

Yeah, Homer did a lot of good things, but toward the end of his tenure I think he lost focus, cracked, got rattled, whatever...and struggled to make things work.

If Vinny's going to retire, my willingness to eat money increased a bit, too. I'd shop just about every defenseman at the deadline. If you can free up enough money, you can turn around and do what the Isles did, and jump on another team's cap issues and replace the guys you deal away with similar guys on cheaper, shorter deals.

Can't believe how badly dudes like Stewart and Hodgson have mailed in their seasons... surprised Nolan still has hair on his head.
