Fast tracking to the NHL. I love it.

I don't advocate tanking, I advocate having a realistic view of your team & it's chances.

Based on talent, the Flyers should be a bubble team. There are a lot of pieces under performing. The list includes core guys(Simmonds, Couturier), old vets on their last gasp(Lecavalier & Umberger) and guys in the middle(Read, Coburn).

Even if those players were performing to expected levels, this team is not a contender, or even a piece or two away. They face serious cap issues. I have zero issues with them deciding to sell.

In terms if building, you need smart trades, drafting and free agency to be a winner. What they need to avoid is giving fading or mediocre players big contracts. No long term deals to Lecavaliers & AMacs. Find more MDZ types & save the long deals for key guys

I'm ok if they want to keep him around next year I guess and buy him out next summer if they want to shave a year of the buyout.

If it were up to me I wash my hands this summer of both. I understand the cap ramifications but the dead weight on the roster bothers me more.

If they need the cap space to do something else, then go ahead. I personally have not closed the book on Umberger yet. I doubt that he improves enough to make it worth his cap hit, but I do think he can play better hockey then he has to this point.

Mike Richards had a mediocre first 2 seasons (injuries played a part in 06/07, as did the roster), until he finally broke out in the 07/08 season, which was probably his best season overall. I don't think Laughton will ever break out offensively like Richards did, but there's no reason he can't be a solid 2nd/3rd line center who can get time on both the PP and PK.

I think the point was missed earlier today by my thoughts of Laughton. I like Laughton a lot. However, if the Flyers bottomed out and we ended up drafting McDavid, I would choose Sean Couturier over Scott Laughton in terms trying to build a winner. To me, we have our shutdown center of the future. With this said, I understand that Couturier should bring in a far greater return right now, I'm not exactly pushing either out the door right now.

I think Scott Laughton is a breath of fresh air right now. He missed a chance of making the team out of camp this year. He was sent back to juniors in 2013. He's playing like his ass is on fire to keepbhis spot because he could still be sent down if he shows any signs of not being an NHL player.

I certainly hope the worst of the season is behind them. Can it get much worse?

I think they should continue to try to win. They need to avoid the trap of thinking that adding a depth defenseman at the cost of a 2nd rounder will make them a good enough team to compete.

They also need to decide that if they get a good enough offer, to trade away a guy who can help right now to add draft picks and/or prospects and provide cap relief for next season.

They have 8 defenseman, so I don't see them looking to trade for a depth defenseman. They already have plenty. I don't think there is any doubt that some of those defenseman, won't be back next year to make room for one or more of the young defenseman to make the team.
