Which is why Umberger needed to be extra cautious with his decision to try and drive it off the glass.

It is always a risk to send the puck up the middle, but in this instance - at least from my vantage point, nestled in the corner of the soft confides of my couch with a face stuffed full of Tostidos - it seemed he had no obstruction in front of him.

When umberger made contact with the puck it was not rolling. Perhaps not completely flat on the ice but not rolling. He needs to make a better play there.

i've seen mason get ticked off at the opposition now and then... maybe he wants to stay calm and feels like that would be more helpful than freaking out. he and emery can good cop bad cop it.
- -davies-

generally, it's better for goalies to be calm and even keeled, not stick wielding maniacs. i can't think of anything specifically where i've seen him show some emotion, and maybe he has. i have no complaints with his play. he's been excellent this season and if he had a decent team in front him, he'd have a much better w/l ratio.

looks to me like he did wait for the puck to settle before he clearly drove trhe puck over the flyers bench. the puck is flat when his blade strikes it. or very close to flat on the ice.
someone upthread sugeesting how we didnt know if he was trying to send it down the middle of the ice? his follow through goes right towards the boards.

- Briere

with the small size of the video here, i can't tell if the puck is on edge or not, but he clearly had no other intention than to hammer it with a slapper without stopping, and his follow through is pointed directly toward the bench. i feel, as nastyflyergirl said, he was careless/reckless, especially in that situation being down a man, time/score etc.

He had time to control it and then make a more controlled clear or even skate it out. he had plenty of room to get it out to center ice and waste more time off the clock.

He simply skated up to the lose puck and let rip. Zero need to do that when the team is trying to kill the clock as well as the penalty

- Jsaquella

exactly. that's the mistake. he had several other options. bad luck on a rolling puck is not an acceptable excuse.

Flyers finally win and there's a multi page debate on whether or not umberger could have had cleared a puck better. Tough crowd!
- funmaster18

of course there is. it's clear it was a bad play. i just want a veteran like him, one who's struggled mightily, to make the smart play. umberger has been immune from having ice time reduced, being scratched etc for his poor play. what if a young, new, rookie type made that play (if they happened to be out there at that critical time), and made that mistake? would he be plastered to the bench the rest of the game? dropped a line next game? benched next game? i dunno'. glad the play didn't cost them.

he does. i guess discussing a specific play that went badly is NEGATIVE. nobody is screaming bloody murder, said he sucks, said he should be benched because of....just discussing what happened at a critical juncture and wished he took a different approach. not a big deal.

Here is something to get excited I think.
Im pretty sure we all think Sanheim is our best shot at a true number 1 dman in the future.

In his last 6 GP, Flyers 2014 1st rd pick @sanheim17 has 3G, 9A, 12 PTS, and is plus-seven.

Berube hasn't scratched players when they've made individual mistakes. If he did, a lot more players would've have found themselves in the press box.

It becomes a bigger deal when a big factor such as the puck being on edge is dismissed when it was the biggest factor as to why the puck went out of play.

It's been frustrating -- not sure Sanchez shouldn't take an extra half-second in the pocket, try something downfield

At some point, they're going to have to test that secondary 15-20 yards down field -- not easy to do, but sometimes you just gotta take a shot

Man

I'm not going to female dog too much because at least they're winning games, but it's fairly clear they're a notch below the four or five best teams in the league

Yeah -- obviously, that's a big game next week. But it's a bad matchup for the Cowboys, since Romo needs time, can't run, and the Eagles rush the passer like they do

Still, this game is frustrating
