By then he'll be in the press box watching the D whom are currently prospects play ahead of him. |

You can look at the DZS% in relative terms against the team's overall average and find that Coots' usage is still an extreme outlier for a player of his role/age/etc.
I think what PSG was alluding to is the coach's responsibility to also develop and foster young talent, with future winning in mind. Not just a myopic preoccupation with the present. - Tomahawk
Of course it's an outlier, but the point that you missed is that if the Flyers earn more offensive zone draws, and lessen how many D zone draws that they have to take, Couturier's percentage of defensive zone starts will change.
I disagree that Berube has a myopic preoccupation with the present. A player zone start percentage only details shifts that start with a faceoff. As an example, in the last game against the Kings, Couturier had 28 total shifts. Only 7 of which started in the defensive zone. In the Anaheim games, Couturier also had 28 total shifts, 11 of which started in the defensive zone. In the Sharks game, Couturier had 22 total shifts, 5 of which started in the D zone.
So while I think that there is no doubt that Couturier is burdened with a high percentage of D zone shifts, the reasons behind that are obvious. And instead of constantly criticizing the coach which is really the only myopic viewpoint here, look at the situation and all the factors, and realize that the coach is working with a short deck.

Lecavalier was actually doing very well on the top PP before he got hurt. When he returned from injury, he wasn't on the top PP anymore because Schenn was clicking in his spot. In my opinion, Schenn deserves it more but it doesn't really matter which one of them plays there. - SuperSchennBros
I have to disagree here. In my opinion, Lecavalier didn't look comfortable at all in the spot in the slot that Hartnell used to occupy. He's much more comfortable in the spot on the other side that Voracek is at.

AMac for Talbot and Tanguay. Colorado needs D. Talbot and Tanguay both UFAs after next season. Money evens out with us only taking a 250K cap increase this year and next. Then we're off the hook. |

Funny thing about Akeson is that he is overhyped just like Tye McGinn. Remember all thos people posting that McGinn should be a regular on the team and a healthy scratch is all he's amounted to on two separate teams. Akeson just isn't that good. He's a guy who will be an AHL regular because he is one dimensional and can't be put on a 4th line because of that. |

Just read the Lecavalier feature. Feel bad for him in the regard that he truly doesn't know where his game is right now
Could he help another team? Maybe. I do think he can still make offensive plays. But with where the Flyers are and how they have to play, I just don't think Chief can put him back in the lineup - AllInForFlyers

Apparently he should be a top line winger and would put up 60 points if given the chance. In the ECHL maybe. |

Yes. Far be it from me to recommend giving Couturier more opportunity when we can use him for some of the toughest minutes in hockey so we can miss the playoffs or lose in the first round. |

Not earth shattering but pretty spot on.

The underlined paragraph is absolutely pathetic.
The Flyers' inability to draft and develop their own defensemen has forced them into needing to go outside the organization to find help, often paying a premium to acquire it. Just consider that the last defenseman drafted by the Flyers to play more than 100 games for the team was Joni Pitkanen, the No. 4 overall pick in 2002. Before him, you have to go to back Janne Niinimaa in 1993. |

Damn that Jason Akeson. In his 21 NHL games played he has bust written all over him. Burn him!
Better to play those vets who have no chance at significantly improving their games over this bum.

...which has been my rub regarding Homer for the longest time.
If he could've drafted one, or (heaven forbid) two defensemen over his tenure, he wouldn't have had to lay out a 4 year 21 mil contract to a 35 year old Streit, or bid against himself for the services of AMac for an overinflated 6 year, 30 mil deal.
It's like the defenseman who pulls down the forward on a breakaway. It's considered a good play until you realize it was the d-man who let the forward walk by him to begin with. No, it's not a good play. And the Steit/AMac signings weren't good either. Necessary perhaps because of the predicament Homer placed himself in by poor drafting.
Would there have been a need for either if he had drafted Maatta and/or Carlson? |

I think the underlying problem is that the team is unwilling to embrace a rebuilding season. It would do the team so much good if they just sacrificed the season in order to evaluate the talent on the team and cleared some salary.
I'm not saying the team should tank, but if they believe Couts should be a 2nd line center, they should put him in that role and allow him to get second line type shifts.
If they think Laughton has shutdown center ability, they should throw him out against some top lines or in the defensive zone.
Perhaps, they get a good look at guys like Akeson, Straka and Leier to see if they're part of the future.
What good does it do this team to continually play vets on a bad team. No amount of window dressing is going to make Umberger or VL into a viable player. They are practically untradeable. - PhillySportsGuy
precisely.
