Pretty good if they hadn't panicked after the draft and moved JVR for a defenseman who couldn't crack the Leafs.
Thus began the downward spiral of snagging D from bad teams and pretending they were going to make us better.
...and Pronger - mayorofangrytown
First of all, it is false that the Schenn couldn't crack the Leafs, and I would say making deals for defenseman was a product of Pronger suffering a freak career ending injury, versus the JVR trade as the genesis.

So finishing last doesn't directly translate to a better situation? |

No. You could draft Connor McDavid and he could be injury prone his entire career or despite all the accolades he could be David Legwand.
Nothing you do is guaranteed to make you better but I'm absolutely sure that this isn't the LA Kings franchise I'm watching this season. Sneaking into the wildcard and making the playoffs isn't going to make this club better.
Right now they're lucky to have 9 wins under their belt. They won't finish last but the playoffs are a pipe dream with this roster and you don't even have pieces to sell off at the deadline that's going to nab you anything of value. |

From the Flyers standpoint this is exactly why the deal was made.
I like Luke Schenn but I was against the deal in the first place because we acquired Grossmann at the deadline prior to that summer, who virtually brings the same intangibles. I suppose the thought process was that Luke could do a better job then Kubina was doing because there was no way Schenn was ever replacing Chris Pronger. Plus JvR was the clear cut better player in the deal and a potential top line winger. |

Luke Schenn the year he was traded was Toronto's 6th defensemen getting 16 minutes a night and was healthy scratched a couple of times. The last two years on the Flyers, he has been a 6th defenseman getting 16 minutes a night. Looks like he has been exactly what he was when they traded for him. |

Oh wow. You mean Luke Schenn was unable to to carry the Toronto Maple Leafs to the playoffs?

Sure they do. Doug Murray garnered 2 second round picks at the trade deadline. Not sure about you, but I don't link this teams future to what they're able to do at this years trade deadline.

Haven't back-read today but these next few games are huge in determining where the team is headed this year. CBJ CAR NJ. Wins over CBJ and CAR will help put some room between us and the bottom. And NJ, matchups against a team like the Devils are going to be must wins if they stand a chance of making a comeback in the standings. |

How about the other years when he was a top defenseman for the Leafs averaging over 20 minutes a game?

He did that two of four seasons and never finished higher than 4th among Leafs defensemen in Avg TOI. These were not good teams. |

No worries. We will see how many teams will be knocking down his door to sign him once he hits UFA status.

Chris Stewart also had back to back 28 goal seasons. Should the Flyers trade Brayden Schenn for him now? Why pay top 4 defenseman prices when he wasn't a top 4 defensemen? How come Toronto didn't pay for JVR as a 20 goal scorer with 7 goals in 11 playoff games? Even at potential for potential the trade was a huge loss as L. Schenn was going to max out as a top notch defensive defenseman and JVR ceiling was that of a all star 1st line winger.
