I thought he made a huge mistake when he traded Hartnel. I thought he was the guy that pushed the compete level for all the young guys. - spatso

I don't think anyone believes that. I feel the Flyers could have dumped him for a mid round pick without taking back an awful player like Umberger - PhillySportsGuy

If Hartsy had like 2-3 years left, maybe he could have been dumped for a pick... maybe.
Gags only had 1-year at $5.25M left and they had to take 3-years, and almost $5M worth of Matt Walker to get that to go. |

Personally, I don't think Hartnell gets just a pick unless the Flyers retain some salary. |

I'm not sure. I think they had to get a somewhat bad contract in return or else eat some of Hartnell's. I also think Hextall wanted a roster player which would make sense. I don't think anyone could have predicted Umberger would be the train wreck we've seen most of the season though. Either way, Hartnell did not have a very friendly deal and I think that fact gets lost often. - NickTheKid87
I feel like the salary never gets lost. What gets lost is that Hartnell was a good player last year and Umberger was awful. Expecting those things to change was foolish. Hextall (frank)ed up that deal. It won't kill them but I'll never believe that was the best deal out there |

Maybe they take back salary but do you truly believe that was the best deal out there for Hartnell? |

I mean, who wouldn't want to emulate Scott Hartnell's on-ice discipline and skating style?

I definitely heard (and argued against ) a number of people saying RJ would pretty much be what we've seen so far.
But, y'know, at least we've got a sign in the locker room now. |

I'm not sure it was the best deal out there but I don't think it was the worst when put in context. Neither guy was/will be part of the future regardless. |

I love the sign. Every time someone is passive aggressive with me I think "Now I know what it feels like to be a Flyer" and I realize my childhood dream has come true. |

I was against the trade from the beginning as well. If you watched Columbus last year you could tell he was cooked. I knew they were getting another line anchor to go with Vinny |

Why didn't the Flyers do that then? I think it's pretty safe to say that the trade market for Hartnell was pretty small. |

Culture change!
I like the more disciplined game, but unfortunately it seems that all the team toughness has disappeared with it. - MBFlyerfan
it doesn't help the PK has pretty much gone down the pooper, either. |

Umberger wasn't awful last year. He may have fell out of favor in Columbus, but he still scored 16 goals. |

I feel the deal was made out of resentment for Hartnell instead of rational thought. I feel they wanted him gone so badly, they weren't going to look around much. They found a player they were familiar with and pulled the trigger |

Between being forced into a salary dump or signing a guy to a silly extension, neither put the team in spot to get fair trade value.
No idea if it was the best deal avail... I'm sure Hexy/Chief wanting Umby played into it.
I'm just really, really glad they got out from under that contract. Better one year too soon, than a year too late. |

They didn't need to move Gagne, they chose to. They could've kept Gagne.
