I thought overpaying for basement dwelling islander defense to do our heavy lifting would have turned out better than this. |

I won't be surprised if Berube gets the hook, but I don't know that anyone wins big with this current roster, though they should be playing a little better - AllInForFlyers
And that's my point. The roster is basically a cluster F but they should'nt be 2-11 over the last 13, either. The current coach isn't getting it done and I doubt he can change anything. |

The coach should be fired so his desperation to keep his job doesn't get in the way of development for players like Couturier. 36% OZ starts is ridiculous.
And if they don't want to fire Berube, at least get rid of the guy in charge of the 29th ranked PK. |

Changing coaches now won't do anything. in the short term yes it might put a little jolt in them. This is like Sandberg for the Phillies. Was he really supposed to get that team to a World Series. Should Brett Brown be fired because the Sixers are getting blown out almost every night.
I think Hextall isnt firing berube because he knows he has limitations with this roster. They both have the same idea for the team. Defensive, puck possesion and disciplined. I think if there is any change it might be in the offseason when he can talk to other options and see who becomes available. It looks more and more like Babcock is staying in Detriot so Blashill in Grand Rapids will be a hot name. Stevens in LA and the Marlies coach will all be options.
The thing that Hextall if probably doing now is looking at the landscape and gaging interest on certain players. Even if he doesn't make a move now he will know what players might be in demand at the TDL. I think his first order of business will be reshaping some of the roster to best fit the style and culture he wants and also see if he can get some cap flexibility |

I look at some of the regression and want to agree, but then I look at the roster and feel like giving any coach the shiv with so much money tied up in players who can't perform at that level...it's a tough business, and wins and losses matter. But it is hard for me to see how anyone could have gotten more out of the train wrecks that are VLC and Umberger, and the defense is just jacked when Coburn and MacDonald try to play hard minutes for extended stretches

While I'm not thrilled with Berube, firing him before the end ofvthe season is pointless. Look at the crap he's had to work with:
Shot vets who should retire: VLC & RJ
Minor leaguers: Akeson, VDV, Jones
Borderline 4th liner: Rinaldo
Generic 4th liner: Bellemare
Top 9 player whos playing like poop: Read
3rd liners: Coots, Laughton and Raffl
That leaves only 4 forwards who are legit top 6 players
And on D:
3rd pair guys: CC, Schenn, Schultz,
Borderline 2nd pair guys: MDZ, AMac, Grossmann
Solid 2nd pair guy: Streit
2/3 guy who is struggling as the top guy: Coburn
This is not a playoff roster, that is simply reality |

I have zero faith in this guy. I thought he was in over his head to take a possible contender to the promised land 14 months ago. |

Fair enough -- I really can't argue against that, tbh. Because while I don't know that a new coach would do better, I can't honestly sit here and say that i know it won't help |

I agree w/ Feanor above... it might not help in the W/L's, but it could do wonders for some of these youngsters. Only problem is... you're drawing from a very shallow pool of candidates right now (just like they did when they fired Lavi 3-games in). |

Guys, guys... listen, we're only 7 points out of a playoff spot. This season isn't lost. There are a lot of good players on this team who can still turn their seasons around. They could have been 4-0 on this road trip, all they needed was a few bounces and they'd be right back in the playoff race. It's a team game and if they play as a team they can get over the hump.
It's only December. |

berube has insisted on playing guys like umberger and misusing players like couturier... he shall die on umberger hill as he said.

Honestly, I think the Flyers are concerned about of lot of players on the roster, Couturier and Read among them. - bmeltzer
Its easier to name the players I am not concerned about |

Call me crazy, but I think it's kind of a half full outcome to the game and road trip. The team was performing horribly before the trip, was in each game, is starting to look more like a team, and sometimes before you break through you have to be close, the next step to me is they'll start finding ways to win these close games. Last night's game in some ways was a game we deserved to win. A lucky bounce and a questionable goalie interference go the other way, maybe things shake out differently and we get a break and get a lead. This team has lost mostly close games, which leads me to think it's a confidence issue, not a talent issue. But then again, I'm a little overly optimistic when it comes to the flyers. |

Beube has a boss you know.
He might very well love to bring up a Cousins or Leirer but that might not be an option. Hextall's stance on patience with the younger players in the AHL has limited options for the NHL club.
We have no clue about meetings that happen probably every day but hextall could be insisting that Umberger play. Also really what other options are available to him. You can replace Umberger with Vinny if you want but then you lose someone to tak PK minutes. Sit both Umberger and Vinny but then you have players like Rinaldo, VDV, Bellemare, and maybe Jones or Akeson or Rosehill taking on more minutes or larger rolls.
