People wearing shoes and boots walk on the rubber floors at the arena, which means there is sand, rocks etc on the floor, which is bad for your blades.

Wear skate guards at all times except on the ice.

I'm guessing it makes more of a difference with speed skates than hockey skates. You always see speed skaters taking off the guards before they step on...hockey players....not so much.
