You buy them out. the lineup will soon have many entry level deals. By the time those entry level deals are up the cap hits on the buyouts are minimal. You just can't keep these guys around they are too much of a drag.

Biggest issue there is in two years, when Voracek, Brayden Schenn & Couturier need new deals.

Yep, after the Flyers pay that $2mm bonus, and assuming they eat another $2.25mm per year, that's a miniscule amount of salary for another team to absorb.
- Jsaquella

The following scenario is better than a buyout if they could get it done. Flyers get back conditional pick(s) based on goals/points.

year 1 $2 million Bonus + $1.5 million, Save $1 million on Cap.
year 2 Eat $2.5 million, save $2.0 million on the cap
year 3 Eat $2.5 million, save $2.0 million on the cap

I'd trade him with a pick to get future considerations.

With all that money how high of a pick would you deal?

That's when this stuff's gonna be resolved -- if Voracek's playing like this, the ask could be a legit $7 million-plus

4th rounder or so.

Ideally, he'd simply agree to a termination. I scoured the CBA & asked capgeek, there's nothing specific about a player having to violate his SPC, just he and the team need to agree to a termination, after he passes unconditional waivers-or in Vinny's case he could refuse the waivers.

Now, the trick is getting him to walk away from $8.5mm on July 2nd. Because that's the condition. Doubt any team in the NHL agrees to hand him a deal with that much cash attached

I had counted on paying Voracek at least $6.5mm, anyhow. If he continues to produce like he has, it might be $8mm

HOLY (frank) -- Filip Forsberg's a plus-25 in 28 games

I can honestly say that while I was a little too young to track Gretzky's numbers with that kind of detail, that's one of the most amazing stats I've seen in years. Yeah, plus-minus is flawed, but DAMN

Tell him they have no plans to dress him unless it's an emergency but also say you won't be buying him out

You're still paying him $8.5mm over 3 years. If he agrees to terminate, he gets nothing.

That's what I'd try to drive him to agree to doing. But they'll end up playing him in hopes he does enough to improve some level of trade value.

The League and the NHLPA have to agree to allow the termination. From what I've seen, the League isn't going to agree to the termination just because the team and the player agree to do so.

I would suggest reading paragraph 14 of Exhibit 1 in the CBA. Exhibit 1 clearly spells out the conditions under which an SPC can be terminated. Either by a buyout, or by mutual termination.

That's a lot of $$$ to eat while sending a 4th rounder. If considerations could void the pick transfer and possibly send back a pick (say 20 gails or 50 points) I'd probably pull the trigger.

You are right, and I understand why.

But at some point, someone has got to stand up and say, "Look. He's got an NMC in his back pocket and has made $100 million over his career. We're sorry this is where we are, but this is where we are. Again, we are sorry. And if his agent can find a trade where we can even pretend that the deal doesn't harm the team, great. If we have injuries, we'll play him. But until then, this is what it is. And people have got to accept this."

Anybody have any conspiracy theories, so to speak, running through their heads, with the recently announced Lecavalier injury?

Apparently, to some posters there's a difference between this statement

"...just he and the team need to agree to a termination, after he passes unconditional waivers-or in Vinny's case he could refuse the waivers."

and

Exhibit 1 clearly spells out the conditions under which an SPC can be terminated. Either by a buyout, or by mutual termination

Truthfully? Think it's a "mental health day" -- he's pissed and he needs a minute or two to think this through

He never thought he'd be scratched this long, and I do believe he's soul-searching...and is pissed pissed pissed

Just say Vinny retires tomorrow -- bear with me, let me finish -- but just say that's what he does. Then he wants to play next season.

He has to apply for reinstatement if he retires with time left on his contract, right? Not that it wouldn't necessarily be granted, but it doesn't necessarily have to be, right?

Obviously the NHL would have to approve, because they have to approve all transactions, be it a free agent signing or retirement or trade.

That's the gray area. If both Vinny & the Flyers want to terminate the deal, and there is some need to have a violation of the SPC, it can be easily created.
