I love Laughton, and I'm higher on Hagg than most, but I'd probably make that deal.

Look at the organization he's been under...poorly run team, where nobody plays good fundamental hockey...I'll take Hall, give him structure and room to play his game, and watch the 50 goals go in

I agree completely.

Merry Christmas.

definitely a mode of thinking worth exploring.

i was just limiting my evaluation to purely the players involved, but i agree. it would benefit the flyers the most to get hall and then flip him for a young defender. id have to think the list of suitors would be long.

adding hall to the flyers would allow for voracek to really be given his own line, or for the creation of a second line built around hall. but i do think youre right. the net gain would be the biggest to move hall for a defender. he would provide a much greater return than the package moved for him could garner.

If you can get a young defender than the Oilers will jump on that deal first so I don't think you can go that direction.

hell yeah. that would be my plan for him as well. while ultimately id just love if the pens could move smaller pieces for a guy like perron or tlusty, i would be tempted to pour assets into hall if he is actually available.

although for the flyers, i think he would ultimately be better off in a deal for a defender as PSG just pointed out. now there would be some fun hypothetical tire kicking haha

I havent seen Hall enough to fully evaluate his game. I just know top line scorer isn't really the biggest need for the Flyers. They need more Laughtons and Haggs

I'm a fan of all four Philadelphia teams. Next week will likely determine if I will be seeing a Philadelphia playoff game within the next calendar year

i agree that top line scorer really isnt a huge need. but it would provide scoring balance via trickle down effect. and the value there is such a discrepancy to me where you take it and figure it out after. like you said, you would be able to flip him for a greater return than laughton and hagg could have given you.

and youre free of vinny haha

If they are serious about moving the puck up ice and possessing it the offensive zone, they'd be fools not to deploy him.

It's all moot because the Oilers would not move him for that kind of offer. The deal would need to include one of the young roster players+top prospect

did they really? wow. you would think that at least ONE team would be lower. i know its a ton of stars that need to align, but i would have thought that with hamels and Lee that at least one or two teams would have a lower projected chance.

oh well. i'm fine with being bad right now. its going to take some time to flush things out and rebuild. i just wish someone would forward those vegas odds to the braintrust.

The whole flip him for a greater return is really pushing the speculative aspect of this fictional transaction.

We can rid ourselves of Vinny at any time, but there will be a cost either in players or in a cap hit for years. The deal looks great because nobody has any idea what the top end for Hagg or Laughton is, or Hall for that matter. Also, does acquiring Hall make us legit cup contenders, or will we have to trade additional assets to fix the weakest part of the team, the D?

That's crap. We all know every good hockey trade starts as a rumor on modestly popular fan sites.

Injuries remain my biggest concern with Hall. He's a machine when healthy, but he plays hard and physically. He'd still be a good player if he didn't play that style, but he's an out and out stud when he does.

Would Giroux alone get you Doughty, OEL, Peitrangelo, or even a Hedman or McDonagh? I don't think it would. And even if it could, do you really trade your captain, your fire (no ginger joke intended), and your best playmaker?

You definitely don't want to add even more to that deal. Besides, 10-14-49 down the middle is a hell of a lot worse than 28-14-49.

- kcm57

I definitely think a franchise center, leads the league in points over the past 4 years and is only 26 would be able to bring back any D-man in the league, alone. In fact I 'd say whoever acquired him won the trade.

i think all trade proposals rely heavily on speculation. while i dont think it would be likely of a team to acquire a star player simply to turn around and deal him, i dont necessarily think its outside the realm of possibility should the team be so inclined to do such.

for your last part, if forced to give either a yes or no answer, i would say no. as you point out, it doesnt address the biggest issue of the defense. but, i do think it ultimately is a higher intake of value coming in than value going out. and any time that can be had, its at least worth addressing.

again, as was just mentioned, there is no way the oil even take this. but simply just going down the path presented, i think it would be one worth going down.

With the scarcity of franchise defenseman, and how hard they are to acquire, I'd go the other way. There's quite a few defenseman that I don't think Giroux would fetch in a trade.

I think you have a valid point there, that if the Flyers are going to give up that value in assets, they really should be doing it to upgrade the defense. Although they certainly do need a playmaking LW.
