Draft has always been my favorite day of the hockey calendar, but this year's going to be extra sweet. I've got so many favorites already, Marner among them. - Tomahawk
I hope they draft Tom Wilson part deux and you get all upset |

It is, that's why he got what he got in Free Agency. That's how free agency works. - MJL
He signed his extension in April, not free agency. Presumably to get him before he could sign elsewhere and for a lesser price than free agency. He signed for 6 years/$30m as you know ($5m cap hit). Other FA dmen and their contracts:
Mark Fayne (4 years/$3.625m cap hit)
Dan Boyle (2 years/$4.5m)
Tom Gilbert (2 years/$$2.8m)
Christian Ehrhoff (1 year/$4m)
Anton Stralman (5 years/$4.5m)
Andrej Meszaros (1 year/$4.125m)
Brooks Orpik (5 years/$5.5m)
Stephane Robidas (3 years/$3m)
Matt Niskanen (7 years/$5.75m)
Willie Mitchell (2 years/4.25m)
Given these guys, I guess AMac got about market value although Niskanen and Orpik have a lot more years that NHL execs perceive as "good". AMac hasn't done much in his career. I think it's totally plausible that the Flyers jumped the gun much like the Phillies did with Papelbon.

With the 14th pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers are proud to again select Garrett Klotz. |

MacDonald was signed for 6 years. How do you base if the deal was worth it or not, based on the results of one season? - MJL
My point wasn't really that he isn't worth 6 years 30 million. He may of got a similar deal from another team. I personally wouldn't give him that deal as I feel what he does can be found for cheaper.
My point was that when you take the entire package we gave up for Amac, I don't like it at all. That 2015 second rounder may prove to be extremely valuable. |

MacDonald had an asking price, and he was going to get that from the Flyers or he would have tested free agency. Whether he signed with the Flyers in April or not, he was still negotiating with UFA leverage.

In that case, the Flyers may have been better off waiting until free agency. I don't think it's that big of a deal if AMac walks compared to possibly overpaying him for 6 years. |
