He's mostly paired with Carle or Hedman so he's got a couple nice anchors plus the team's commitment to team defense.. I think he'd get torched on the Flyers blueline tbh |

Idk. I wanna get rid of Amac at all costs. That being said, I don't think he's that bad of a player. Hes your average second pair guy in my opinion. I just don't think he's worth his contract. Some will argue that was market value, but that's bs. If that's what he would of gotten in the open market, then you let him walk. You only make a signing like that if you're an average 3-5 defender away from being a contender, which we weren't. The picks we traded from him are just salt in the wounds.
Although I believe Amac was a huge reason we made the playoffs last year. So if last year's first round exit was worth a 3rd rounder and 2015 2nd plus 6 years at 30 mil..... I guess whatever floats your boat. - JFlyers00
Trading for him allowed them to move Meszaros to Boston for a third, so the net result was losing a 2nd. But I didn't want them to pay him any more than 4 years, $18 million. I think that would have been fair. |

In that case, the Flyers may have been better off waiting until free agency. I don't think it's that big of a deal if AMac walks compared to possibly overpaying him for 6 years. - NickTheKid87
Probably would have been better off not trading the picks, too...probably make playoffs & lose in round 1 AMac or no AMac |

Yes sir. That is the way it works! The results on the ice certainly back up every one of his opinions! |

Matt Carle would be the best defender of the Flyers this season.
He'd also be getting picked apart on here every day. |

He signed his extension in April, not free agency. Presumably to get him before he could sign elsewhere and for a lesser price than free agency. He signed for 6 years/$30m as you know ($5m cap hit). Other FA dmen and their contracts:
Mark Fayne (4 years/$3.625m cap hit)
Dan Boyle (2 years/$4.5m)
Tom Gilbert (2 years/$$2.8m)
Christian Ehrhoff (1 year/$4m)
Anton Stralman (5 years/$4.5m)
Andrej Meszaros (1 year/$4.125m)
Brooks Orpik (5 years/$5.5m)
Stephane Robidas (3 years/$3m)
Matt Niskanen (7 years/$5.75m)
Willie Mitchell (2 years/4.25m) - NickTheKid87
I still think the Robidas contract was crazy. Three years at $3 million for a small, 37 year old defenseman who broke his leg twice last season? |

Yeah that too. IMO, Hextall doesn't make that deal or sign him to a contract like that. Not to bash Homer either, AMac just happened before what seems to be a long term plan was put into place (by Hextall with blessings from above ie Snider). |

Tampa fans seems to bash him even more than we ever did.

Barely used NHL defenseman - $1 (Tampa)
Up for grabs we have NHL defenseman Matt Carle. He's played with several NHL teams that don't want him anymore so here is your chance to get in on the disappointment the Lightning, Sharks and Flyers endured. It is not necessary that he play hockey, he's great at cooking pancakes as he has lots of experience turning things over. Also makes a good lawn ornament as he enjoys standing around doing nothing. Made in America. |

Lol I would love Carle back. I wish they would have kept him honestly but oh well. He's wouldn't really have been part of the future either. |

Think it was just normal Flyers ideology. They needed to shore up D for playoffs. MacDonald was available and somewhat filled their perceived needs. |

Happy Hannakuh to you too. - Tomahawk
Lol…Just to add to the MacDonald debate. Since arriving, he's scored 7 ES points in 38 games. That equates to about 15 ES points per 82 games. To put that in perspective, Grossmann has the exact same average over the last 2 seasons (108 games).
MacDonald only has 3 PP points in 38 games despite seeing regular time on the second unit.
Those really aren't numbers of a puck moving Dman. His numbers were inflated in NY because he played 25+ minutes each night and was on the top PP unit.
His offensive play is all about relativity. When you compare him to the Flyers defenseman, he's a solid offensive player. When you look at him compared to the 179 other starting defenseman in the NHL, he's probably average. That might be generous too. |

Streit is better than Carle offensively. Defensively, I don't think either one of them are that good. Overall I think they are comparable. |
