Think it was just normal Flyers ideology. They needed to shore up D for playoffs. MacDonald was available and somewhat filled their perceived needs. - Jsaquella
Yeah seems about right. The extension though...I feel they severely jumped the gun, especially on the length. Comparing it to other UFA deals, it seems reasonable that 6 years would warrant a lesser cap hit. Maybe $4m. Who knows how things would have played out though. |

Flyers have an optional practice, reportedly less than half the players show up.
Very interesting. |

Lol…Just to add to the MacDonald debate. Since arriving, he's scored 7 ES points in 38 games. That equates to about 15 ES points per 82 games. To put that in perspective, Grossmann has the exact same average over the last 2 seasons (108 games).
MacDonald only has 3 PP points in 38 games despite seeing regular time on the second unit.
Those really aren't numbers of a puck moving Dman. His numbers were inflated in NY because he played 25+ minutes each night and was on the top PP unit.
His offensive play is all about relativity. When you compare him to the Flyers defenseman, he's a solid offensive player. When you look at him compared to the 179 other starting defenseman in the NHL, he's probably average. That might be generous too. - PhillySportsGuy
So full of bias, flawed stats and hyperbola. |

For what he brings, a comparable defenseman could have been had for a lot less, as has been argued. Just another bad contract to go with quite a few others. |

They're good. Got the rest of the league right where they want em.
Was Vinny there? Maybe getting Chief donuts and filling his coffee cup? |

Matt Carle would be the best defender of the Flyers this season.
He'd also be getting picked apart on here every day. - jmatchett383
I don't care one way or another, but I would apply this statement to Amac, coburn, and streit currently. |

To be fair, Tyler Johnson does that to the best of defenseman. This is him doing it to Yandle:

Yandle is not very good at the actual defensive aspect of the game though. |

Seriously tho... nice that you guys are so deep you can complain about a guy who's underlying numbers are still really strong. It's been so long I almost forget what that feels like.

Unless there has been word from the top to be a bad team, Vinny is doing his job admirably. |

Imagine how much easier this season would be to take if they had VL, Umberger, Grossmann and AMac on expiring deals |

Carle can be SOOOO infuriating at times. Our depth has improved, but it took a long, long time of being the laughingstock of the NHL. Now we're just not annoying team that everyone thinks is overrated.
On a completely different subject, what did you think of are future possible franchise goalie in Vasilevski? |

Definitely entertaining, if completely predictable.
I feel a visual representation of those discussions is needed:
