Anyone see Giroux whip his bugger on a Ref?

Schultz has absolutely played above expectations, and is a bargain for his cost. No doubt about that. And we know that they overpaid MacDonald in free agency. That doesn't change how good of a player MacDonald is.

I thought you said MacDonalds contract was the going rate? Just like Hartnells was?

Weeks of arguments that happen nearly a year ago just swept under the rug. I guess time heals everything

Who called him that?

The evolution of the arguments against MacDonald are very interesting. Now that his Corsi stats are basically the same as Coburn's and Schultz's (and much better than Grossmann's despite getting the same % of OZ starts) those are ignored in favor of just claiming he never does anything right, even after he had a good game.

- Feanor

Exactly, but the post wasn't really about MacDonald.

It is, that's why he got what he got in Free Agency. That's how free agency works.

So every single team overpays in free agency? There are no good deals?

Amac has been very bad this year. He has not played well enough to come close to justifying his contract. It's that simple.
- jmatchett383

I think he has some periods where he could've been better, for sure. But that is true with just about every player on this team, that isn't named Giroux or Voracek. But I disagree that he has been very bad this year overall. He was very good last night, and has been trending upward since he was scratched for one game.

Come on, you know Corsi is far from the be-all/end-all. You need to look at it with context or it's useless.

Draft has always been my favorite day of the hockey calendar, but this year's going to be extra sweet. I've got so many favorites already, Marner among them.

That's kind of the problem. These bargain signings should be the only signings made in free agency up until we are a true contender and that one piece will put us over the edge.

I didn't say that. There are somtimes situations where a player is willing to take less to play for a team that he really wants to play for, such as Ehrhoff in Pittsburgh.

When and if the Flyers become a true contender, MacDonald could be part of that.

It's not nitpicking. It's a good example how how dumb the coach is.

If Hextall doesn't see this and gives him another year, I will have serious doubts about this team's future.

I was at the game last night, and he did not look good. He wasn't terrible, but he wasn't good.

Now, the rest of the team aside from a few individuals can be criticized similarly. But that doesn't mean they should all be forgiven. And when you look at the salaries/terms of their contracts, AMac is going to be keyed on. If you sign for 6 years at $5M per year, I expect you to play much, MUCH better than Nick Schultz or Nick Grossmann, and he's not.

Coburn's been awful this year. Schultz is a below-avg possession player (as expected). AMac nearing their numbers isn't exactly an accomplishment worth lauding, especially at his salary and level of expectation.

Coburn's numbers are better away from AMac. MDZ even more so. Despite their other most frequent partners have been guys like Schultz and L Schenn, who aren't generally considered above-average 'puck-movers'.

The case for AMac based on stats just ain't really there.

Idk. I wanna get rid of Amac at all costs. That being said, I don't think he's that bad of a player. Hes your average second pair guy in my opinion. I just don't think he's worth his contract. Some will argue that was market value, but that's bs. If that's what he would of gotten in the open market, then you let him walk. You only make a signing like that if you're an average 3-5 defender away from being a contender, which we weren't. The picks we traded from him are just salt in the wounds.

Although I believe Amac was a huge reason we made the playoffs last year. So if last year's first round exit was worth a 3rd rounder and 2015 2nd plus 6 years at 30 mil..... I guess whatever floats your boat.

- JFlyers00

MacDonald was signed for 6 years. How do you base if the deal was worth it or not, based on the results of one season?

I watched the game, and MacDonald had a very strong game last night. Coverage was sound, and he moved the puck very well. So we disagree there. I agree that there are areas that MacDonald can improve at, and I think that will happen. Overall I think the Flyers got themselves a pretty good second pair defenseman, that can help them long term. Would've liked to have seen him come a little cheaper, but I can live with it.
