BUFFALO, NY -- I'm not convinced the Edmonton Oilers are truly ready to move on from Taylor Hall. But if they are, the Buffalo Sabres should be right at the front of the line.
It seems as though the Sabres and Oilers have been perfect trade partners for years, but have never been able to make a deal. Buffalo has a stacked cupboard and can likely outbid any team in a trade offer for the former first-overall pick.
The Oilers are in need of prospects, defense, goaltending, and top-six forward. In other words, pretty much everything. Luckily, for the Oilers, the Sabres can provide all of those needs.
The return the Oilers would get for Hall should be a small fortune. The 23-year-old winger has a lot of value and is a budding star. Any team interested in acquiring Hall better be ready to give up some big pieces.
When/if this trade happens, the Oilers need to look like they won the trade without question. That is the only way this move makes sense for Edmonton.
On the blueline, the Sabres have a few pieces they can offer the Oilers.
First off, Rasmus Ristolainen and Nikita Zadorov are non-starters. With that being said, the Sabres do have a big defenseman to offer in the form of 6-foot-8 Tyler Myers.
Myers is getting huge minutes for Buffalo and is playing more consistent hockey. He and Hall would be two huge names and could be part of one of the biggest blockbusters in some time. Myers would provide the Oilers with a top defenseman and offense from the backend.
Another player from the blueline the Sabres can dangle in front of the Oilers is Mark Pysyk. The former 2010 first-round pick is waiting to get back into the Sabres lineup while he develops in Rochester of the AHL. Pysyk has shown he can play at the NHL level, but still needs to refine a few aspects of his game. The depth the Sabres have on the blueline with prospects like Jake McCabe in the system makes Pysyk a viable option. If Pysyk was to be included a bigger piece would need to be added from another position.
If Edmonton is looking to pick up a forward, as well, the Sabres can add a player like Cody Hodgson to the deal. Hodgson has struggled this season, but is playing a lot better after being a healthy scratch. I believe Hodgson could benefit from a change of scenery and the chance to be a top winger. The 24-year-old winger has always had the talent to be successful, but has struggled with consistency. After this season, Hodgson has four years remaining on his current contract.
The Oilers are in desperate need of goaltending help and the Sabres have two goalies that could be a fit. Jhonas Enroth has been on fire over the past three weeks. I wouldn't be afraid to include Enroth in the deal, but would push Michal Neuvirth first.
Neuvirth has also had a decent season. The Czech goaltender is deserving of another shot to start in the NHL. Though, I try to keep Enroth because the Sabres themselves need a starting goaltender.
Now we get to the picks and prospects. The Sabres have plenty of both to offer. What the Sabres have that no other team can match is three 2015 first round picks.
The Sabres first round pick is not an option, but the picks that belong to the Islanders and Blues are absolutely in play.
The prospect pool is also deep for the Sabres. Buffalo could include the following players in a deal to sweeten the pot; Brendan Lemieux, Nick Baptiste, William Carrier, Hudson Fasching, and Cal Petersen.
I would start the trade discussion with the following offer to the Oilers:
Myers + Neuvirth + Hodgson + Islanders 2015 1st round pick + Prospect
Sabres receive: Taylor Hall + Viktor Fasth
If it takes Enroth over Neuvirth to make the deal happen, I wouldn't shy away from that, either.
The important thing to remember in any trade is the salary cap. According to capgeek.com, the Oilers have roughly $5 million in cap space. Trading Hall and Fasth would leave the Oilers with around $14 million in cap space. Myers, Neuvirth, and Hodgson would fill $12.25 million of that. The Sabres can retain some of Neuvirth's expiring contract to help the deal.
At the end of the day, picks, prospects, goaltenders, roster players; the Sabres have it all. If Sabres GM Tim Murray covets Hall, and the Oilers do end up moving him, the Sabres can make an offer many teams can't match.

I don't think his offer get's it done. It's going to take Myers +++ maybe Foligno or Armia, Psysk, I don't know about Hodgson. I like his offer but don't know if they like it. |

The goal was to draft 1st, maybe 2nd so if we miss out on that and we have a chance to try and trade for Taylor Hall, it's not a total loss. Dial tones for Myers are very popular for Murray but.................... |

Myers is far from a "average" D man, he's a number 1 with speed, size and skill. you can't find him on a everyday basis if you are looking. The Oiler fans that are saying Myers is not worth Hall need some counseling, he is absolutely worth Hall. |
