We have a variety of players that aren't capable of playing to a certain style that we would like them to. This team is far from perfect. This team has holes virtually at every depth position within the line up. We have players who cannot deliver and play a certain style we wish they could. We just have to make the best of what they have and within these past three games if not this entire month, the team has. We're 6-2-3 in our last 11 games for this month. - SuperSchennBros
i'm aware of all of this. it doesn't mean that any of those players are excused from criticism. |

We talked a lot yesterday about the Flyers draft mistakes, so I thought today I would go in the opposite direction. And now, the Flyers top 10 draft picks of all time! Please note that I based this only on their impact as Flyers and took into consideration where they were drafted. In other words, much more is expected from a 1st round pick than say a 5th rounder.
So, without any further ado....
Just missed the cut:
Bob Kelly 1970 3rd round
Gord Murphy 1985 9th round
Mike Richards 2003 1st round
10. Chris Therien 3rd round, 1990
Anytime you can land a top 4 dman who plays on your club for a decade with a 3rd round pick, you've done well.
9. Pete Peeters 8th round, 1977
Pretty good goalie for a 8th round pick, he was a huge part of the 35 game unbeaten streak.
8. Pelle Eklund 8th round 1983
Another awesome 8th round pick!
7. Paul Holmgren 6th round, 1975
Holmgren was a heart and soul player and top 9 forward for nearly a decade, not bad for a late 6th rounder.
6. Jim Watson 3rd round, 1972
Getting an all star dman who is still today, the best home grown dman in team history with a 3rd round pick is an all around win in my book!
5. Bill Barber 1st round, 1972
Sure, you expect 1st rounders to be good NHL players. However when they end up in the Hall of Fame and are usually considered to the be the best all around player in their era at their position, you hit a homerun!
4. Ron Hextall 6th round, 1982
Hexy was dominant his first 3 seasons and very good in the mid 90s as well, plus he bled orange and black as much as anyone in Flyers history. Pretty damn good for a 6th rounder!
3. Claude Giroux 1st round, 2006
When you can get a guy who is considered to be one of the top 10 players in the game and arguably top 5 with the 22nd overall pick, you should be really, really proud of yourself!
2. Rick Tocchet 6th round, 1983
Yet another 6th round gem. If a 6th rounder even makes your club, it's considered to be a success. When he becomes a star player and a physical force, well that's just awesome!!
and at #1......
Bobby Clarke, 2nd round 1969
3 Hart Trophy's and 2 Stanley Cups and every team in the league passed him by at least once (Montreal passed him by 3 times, btw!), well all I can say is, LOL!! Clarke is hands down, the best pick ever by the Philadelphia Flyers. |
