Yup, it's the world according to Berube:

Big, bruisers and energy players get chance after chance no matter how much they (frank) up while smaller, skilled players are banished forever if they make but one mistake.

I don't even disagree...MDZ's play had dipped, noticeably. But I don't think he was worse than anyone still playing. It's not as if they're a defensive juggernaut right now. 3 games won and they've allowed 9 goals over that stretch...if a GA of 3.00 is good, then I'm Captain Jack Sparrow

My boy and I are hittin' the road to Nashville in a few minutes. Going to check out the adventure science center, the parthenon (maybe), and then the game. Stoked to see a game. Chilling in section 205. Hopefully Philly pulls off the win. Lets go Flyers!

Yup. I had no problem with MDZ coming out of the lineup when he did, and even missing 2 or 3 games. I do have a problem with Berube seemingly never going to give him another chance though.

flyers are terrible at drafting. whether it's trading too many picks, long shots or drafting the wrong players. hopefully this will change but they are married to drafting certain types of players "of late".....
i read this somewhere and i think it rings true "when you have paul holmgren, ron hextall, dave brown, craig berube as your brain trust what else would you expect?"

- hogweed

Yeah, they sure do suck. Never made 1 good pick in ever. Who's this Sanheim bust after all?

He got Berube'd. Bigger, grittier guys who are supposedly better in their own end get more rope than offensive guys that don't bang
- Jsaquella

Of Course, but we all know that there is no room in the NHL for an offensive d-man who is also not overly aggressive.

Especially one, at 24, who is way to old to expect any improvement from.

Good thing for the Red Wings that Ken Holland was such a wizard of skill during his 4 game NHL career. Imagine how terrible they would be if not.

Lets see, Keith Allen, Fred Shero, Mike Keenan, Ken Hitchcock...none were skilled NHL players but lets face it, you can't be a successful GM or coach when you weren't a skilled NHL player. Nope, can't be done.

A first round pick. The Flyers have had great success over the years with their first round picks. It's from the second round on that gets a little sketchy.

Have they hit on a few seconds? Sure, but historically, not that often. At least not that many who have had any kind of impact.

Lately, their later selections have showed some promise. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that a few step up.

Yup, it's hard to be successful with 2nd rounders when you rarely have them. I'm very happy with the last 3 though, Stolarz, Hagg and NAK all look like potential NHL players.

Their first round picks for the most part have been very good going all the way back to Zubrus in 96

Too true.
Which is why I stated "from the second round on..."

The fact that Sanheim nearly made the Canadian team is very encouraging.
That team is stacked with talent.

Reading comprehension has never been a strong suit of mine.

I think though, when you look at most teams, you will see way more busts than success stories from the 3rd round and later. It really is a guessing game at that point.

Absolutely.

But you'd wish that they could've found a player at some point during the later rounds who could have contributed. They're out there. Few and far between perhaps, but they're there.

The second round especially, but like you noted, we eliminated any chance of that until just recently.

Sam Morin is only a #7 defenseman on an all-star team in his age group?

He's practically Buster McBustington.

I think if Canada doesn't win the Gold at this tournament, the country may just declare an unnecessary war on whatever team that does win it.

They looked like a machine last night

I was really impressed with a bunch of them, first time watching some of them play.

I thought Morin looked better then #3 Heatherington? for Canada last night, but the other guys all look smoother, and much quicker with the puck. Sam did not look bad, just saying it is tough to compare him with some of those super fluid offensive D men they have.

In the past the Flyer had a tendency to use picks on tough guys or agitators, well ahead of where they were ranked or even a late round pick on enforcers who likely would be available as undrafted FAs.

Guys like Klotz, Goulbourne, Rinaldo & Mathers come to mind. At least Rinaldo played in the NHL. Klotz was not even a good AHL fighter, Mathers has bounced between AHL & ECHL & Goulbourne has been offered only an AHL deal thus far
