They've always been close, they'll continue to be close right up until draft day, but I can't imagine whoever picks 1st overall will pass up on McDavid.

I read it differently than you do. He's saying that if anyone thought that it wasn't actually a two man battle, their question marks surrounding Eichel should be gone at this point.

He's also saying that while McDavid will probably go #1, Eichel is going to make that decision much more difficult than anyone would have thought.
