Umberger and Vinny will certainly be gone. Even if its a buy out. I cant see Grossmann, Amac, Schenn staying much longer either. Hexy will work it out. I have faith he isnt a block head. - GOA88
It'll be hard to move MacDonald. Grossmann, Coburn and LSchenn's contracts expire after next season. I'm sure there will be some trades too but have $9.1m tied up in to almost useless players is a huge problem in the cap world. Luckily Umberger's deal expires after 2016-17 and Lecavalier's after 2017-18 so if they are still here, it'll be easier to move them with out retaining much. |

Thanks Bill. I wouldn't sign anymore players to deals over 4 years. One, the team is going to have to roll over players every few years because of the salaries, so why get stuck with another Bryz or VL contract? Two, current players seem complacent when they get the long term deals, and play to potential during contract years. Three, you have guys waiting in the wings. When do you start bring them up? In addition, you are going to have to be selective to which players you give the big money to. If you give everyone big money, you will be up against the cap every year; can't wait to see how the Hawks fit under the cap. If you give players too much money, the next round of negotiations will force you to start casting off your depth players; look at Boston. I think Hexy is aware of this, hence you are not seeing trades just to make a trade, or quick contracts being made. So far, the only negative that I can see is the Umberger/ Hartz trade. However, I understand that in order to implement his system, he had to shorten the contract length, and try to get a decent player in return. I would have thought Umberger would have some more to contribute, but in his defense, he was unhappy with the Blue Jackets, and he wasn't playing on a regular basis. So, trying to shake off those issues that were around for a few years isn't easy. Just look at Nash with the NYR as an example of trying to adjust to a new team, and system.
Just sayin'. |

I mean I would be fine keeping either of them, as long as they are with the right D partner. I just dont want them to keep all of them. It is a bad mix.
Personally I would like to see L.Schenn stay a little while longer for the 3rd unit. Hopefully he improves to be more, still young. I dont think he is as bad as everyone makes him out to be. Flyers will need his size, physicality and shot blocking. We just cant have (frank)ing 3-4 of the same type players on the back end. Thats why we cant move the puck! |

There's lots of potential benefits to signing players to deal longer then 4 years. I don't think there should be a blanket policy. Each player is different. What if the Flyers had signed Voracek to 6 years at 4.25M instead of 4 years, in 11/12? |

Yup I would prefer Schenn or Coburn unless you can get good assets for them. In two years, you'd have to think Morin, Ghost and Hagg will be ready and maybe Sanheim too. If not, then they may never be. |

Flyers current PK at 74% on pace to be the worst in the NHL since at least 97-98, I'm trying to go back further and find team statistics to see when a PK has been this inept. Laughably bad. - PLindbergh31
Try the mid 70s Scouts or Capitals or the mid 80s Red Wings or Leafs, those teams were some of the worst I ever saw. Also the early 90s Senators
edit: and the mid 80s Pens and Devils, LOL

I agree about L.Schenn, when paired with the proper player. Sometimes he can look lost, but when he keeps his play simple he looks like a decent 3rd pair defender. Plus he has a RH shot. |

You are probably right. So basically through just about half a season the Flyers PK has been the worst we have seen in two decades or so? That's pretty embarrassing. |

What about Wayne Simmonds? He signed a 6 year deal that kicked in last season with a cap hit of $3.975m. That price through 2018-19 is an absolute steal. The cap will likely go up in that time as well, making it an even better deal.
What I have an issue with is giving a player like Vinny Lecavalier a 5-6 year deal. A veteran of 10+ years is not a good long term investment unless they're still an elite talent, and Lecavalier was not.

Grossmann will be easy to move at the deadline. Only 1 year left at 3.5 and there are always contenders looking for big defensive dmen.
Same goes for Coburn with only 1 year left at 4.5. Contenders will line up to get a 6'5 dman with good wheels who has had playoff success in the past and is only 30 with one year left on his deal.

Did anyone see what JR (Roenick) said about our young core? To shake things up? What's everyone's thoughts on this? It made me think of packaging Schenn and Coburn with pick(s) to land EDM first round 2015. I don't see us getting much better this year so we could have two great picks including most likely the 1st overall from EDM. I'd prefer to keep Couts tho. |

No doubt. While they are badly missing Timonen and last year's version of Matt Read, I think they also made a mistake in not re-signing Adam Hall for another year.
Hall's ability to win that opening faceoff on the pk and get an easy clear to start the kill is very sorely missed. Wouldn't you much rather have Hall in the lineup right now than VDV or Rinaldo? |

Agreed. Signing a 33 year old player who was CLEARLY on the decline to a 5 year deal was just asinine and one of the worst moves Holmgren made as GM. |

Even MacT isn't dumb enough to move Edmonton's 1st this year.

Thats probably what will happen. I know a lot of people wont agree with me on this but I will be like to see Coburn leave. Not that I hate him but we need an upgrade and he is complacent on this team now. Also, will be nice to live without his major game changing gaffes. |
