the offense line was brutal
his o line draft picks in the past draft were blah
never addressed the back up qb in the offseason
gave up next years first rd pick for that 1 wr, w/o having a qb that can get him the ball
I think if you give Whaley a C, for a grade, your being kind - homiedclown
the o-line was brutal...if you were whaley, wouldn't you be leaning on a former o-lineman and o-line coach to guide you...like maybe marrone?
the qb situation was ridiculous, but was made worse by poor o-line play and an oc in way over his head
had the bills kept their pick last season, the consensus is they would have pick eric ebron...he suck...the browns picked gilber 8th...he sucked...next year the browns will be drafting 19th...
I guarantee you, if I threw out this proposition trading an 8th overall and a 19th for one of the top-2 players in the draft, 99% would take that trade

The opt out clause in Marrone's contract only became effective for three days at the end of the first season after there was a change in ownership in the team. Given the state that the franchise was in at the time, it wasn't really all that crazy. There was no way of knowing when control of the franchise would change, and whether new ownership would keep the HC, or anybody. If the ownership change happened right away, and there was comp for the year after, it would have been like Marrone took the job for nothing. In the end, it wasn't structured as crazy as it appears. - Der Kaiser
What's crazy is putting in the contract that you can walk away for a year, keep all 4 mil for the season and seek another HC position
Give him a mil and the rights to coach, or give him the 4 mil and force him to take a year off
He flushed 4 mil of Peggy's money down the drain with that contract and if you or I did something like that we would be fired asap in the real world |

Such is the price you pay in hiring for a high profile job. It's simply the cost of doing business. Marrone was one of the highest sought after coaches in 2013 when he was hired. |

If you have a legit fringe pro bowl qb, no doubt
he had ej, tuel and thad lewis
Cyrus Kouandjio and Cyril Richardson should have had an impact on this team
did Whaley scout the other wr's properly or fall in love with watkins?

maybe that's what Pegula should do...regardless of age, bring in the best football people he can get his hands on...
have said it before, chan gailey got the most out of fitz and a weak offensive line...they need guys who can handle almost any situation - Michael Pachla
Gailey would have made a bit of a difference this year, I think.

My only reason for thinking Whaley could be fired is if he gave the go ahead for EJ Manuel, how do you let him select the next QB of the future. ? |

Watkins was far and away the best receiver in the draft. I'm sure he did his scouting, but it didn't take much to see how good he really was. In a couple of years, we're going to be saying "pay that man his money" without blinking an eye. |

I disagree
so many coaches, when let go are forced to take a year off for their money, hence be on tv for a season |

Most of them don't do it because they're forced though. They do it because the right job isn't available. |

I think a lot of this had to do with Marrone. It took how many weeks for him to finally decide that Cyril Richardson wasn't good enough when there was a veteran sitting on the bench that was an upgrade?
Marrone's biggest downfall is the way he feels about people, IMO. He forms his opinion and never changes it. His love for Hackett is baffling to me. He seems to hold grudges and never let them go. |

http://forums.twobillsdri...he-drafting-of-ej-manuel/
New general manager Doug Whaley isn't shy about taking ownership of the pick, even if he was second-in-command to Buddy Nix at the time.
"I was an integral part in the drafting process of EJ Manuel," Whaley said on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access" on Thursday. "I was the person that handled the draft process and setting up the board."
Whaley did allow that it was a "collaborative effort" between area scouts, cross-checkers, coach Doug Marrone and Nix, but the new front-office boss is comfortable with hanging his hat on Manuel after vetting the quarterback in the pre-draft process.
"We have a philosophy that the information makes the decision," Whaley explained. "We think that we did enough due diligence, and the information pointed us all to this point that EJ would be the guy we feel will take the Buffalo Bills into the future." |

rant wasn't directed at you, homie...listening to Jeremy "corporal hindsight" white drives me nuts sometimes...
if I recall, there was little to no talk of beckett ahead of the draft...there was talk of evans but almost all of it centered around Watkins and that he was the top offensive player in the draft |

This will probably never come out publicly, but I wonder if not wanting to fire Hackett was the cause, or a significant reason at least, of Marrone opting out. |

It seemed that Marrone's true personality came out this year. It's like he was on his best behavior the first year and then decided to just be who he actually is this year. Probably because of the out he had in his contract. He knew that inevitably, he could leave on his terms.
Personally, I'm not sad he left. While he may have coached the first team in 10 years to get over .500, I think that had more to do with Schwartz than it did him.
I just hope that Schwartz sticks around. I think it would be tough on the Defense to have a 3rd coordinator in 3 years. Even with all the talent they have on that side of the ball. |

This was my initial thought.
I find it odd that Marrone trashed the organization to Polian. Why would a team hire a back stabber ? |

I am not pissing on the watkins thing
If the GM is going all in with him, have a competent back up qb when training camp starts and fix your o line
honestly, how can EJ and the Bills look so good for the first 2 games, and so blah afterwards?

The way this whole thing went down is just strange. But I would think that any other team would be a bit skeptical of him because of it as well. It's not like Pegula has a reputation for treating his employees badly. In fact, it's just the opposite. |
