I just don't see why they need to jump the gun on him. He's played well, but he's not irreplaceable. I doubt any team is going to offer something unmatchable. - PhillySportsGuy

Yup. If they sign Schultz for 2 years at $1.75mm and then dump Grossmann or Schenn, great. But despite exceeding expectations, it's not like Schultz has been exceptionally good - Jsaquella
Maybe he brings something else to the table that they like. We'll see how it plays out.

That's a good point. Exceeding expectations does not mean playing really well. Any more than 2 years and $2m a year and I'd be really peeved. |

It has to be overt. I've done nothing but give Vinny credit since he came out of the Shelley Suite.
Still wondering why the rush to re-sign Schultz. They have enough 4-7 defensemen to start a commune in Guyana - Jsaquella
If they are interested in bringing Schultz back, there is no reason not to go ahead and get it done. |

You don't come around as much as you used to. Nice to see you making more appearances lately.
Hope all is going well for you.

It's almost comical how he's outplayed AMac in every conceivable fashion, including puck-moving, while on a 1-year value deal.
- Tomahawk
If it wasn't true it would be comical. Absolutely amazing. A guy acquired from the bargain bin is playing better than a player Holmgren gave up assets for the right to overpay. JFC. |

Besides committing to another bottom pairing d-man.

Maybe they got a late first so they can trade for Coburn. Not gonna trade a potential McDavid or Eichel pick for Coburn. - Jsaquella
Re Coburn
id target a western team underperforming or on the cusp of the playoffs. Id love to make a deal with Calgary. They are playing well, maybe view BC as a piece that could improve their team now with the chance to resign him. They aslo maybe a mirage, and if thats the case, Flyers get a much better pick. Other teams id look at, LA, SJ and St L |

It's about value, risk, and the need going forward. Schultz fits a need for this team in the next season or two perfectly. |

MacDonald is a legitimate top 4 NHL defenseman who moves the puck very well.

Every team needs solid reliable veteran bottom pairing defenseman. Especially at the right price. It would be a solid move for the Flyers to retain Schultz in the right deal. |

3 reasons the Flyers should be in no rush to re-sign Schultz
1. His play could significantly tail off in the 2nd half
2. He could get injured
3. He's a more valuable trade chip at the deadline on a 1 year low cost deal |

As the team stands currently. Yes.
But what other options will be available this summer?
The only way I resign him, is if I am planning on moving another d-man. |

I'm pretty sure that at least one D man is going to be moved at some point. The Flyers can't have a complete firesale of defenseman. That would be a really bad move. |

I don't get to watch games much anymore, so i find it inappropriate of me to butch about the team too much.

1. That is true of any player.
2. Also true for any player, and shouldn't be a factor for a shirt term deal
3. I disagre with this. He is more valuable to keep then what I think he would fetch in a deadline deal. If he could fetch a 2nd, I'd trade him, but I don't see that happening. I'd rather keep him them add a 4-5th round pick. |

yea best thing since sliced bread, clearly - JoeRussomanno
Yeah it's nice when VLC ends up on the score sheet but I wouldn't say he's been playing great. He's still consistently a defensive liability. |

Not necessarily a fire sale, but they can move more than one d-man. Hell, they should.
If the d doesnt look marginally different next year, this team is gonna really struggle yet again. |

I think that line has been pretty productive. They play very simple, straight-forward hockey. |

1 goal in 45 GP as a Flyer. Doesn't contribute anything on the PP, has done nothing to improve the PK, but hey his one above average metric shot blocking is down. He's been a complete bargain.
