I think Coburn and Streit are different than the rest. I would want more for them than the others. I would take a 2nd rounder for any defenseman not named Streit or Coburn. I would probably take a 3rd for most of them assuming there was no retention of money.
The Flyers can replace most of these guys in FA. Hextall went out and got 2 guys who have played better than every incumbent except maybe Streit. I have confidence he can do it again.
Maybe they make a push to bring Gus back and promise him a top 6 role to start the season. He'd come pretty cheap. - PhillySportsGuy
Who are the two guys? One is Schultz, who is the other?

It's not mutually exclusive, though -- at some point, you do have to have guys on the NHL roster who can actually play a role, preferably have some experience.
It's entirely possible that Schenn and Coburn are gone next season, as well as Del Zotto and Colicacovo. That is entirely possible.
That's four guys out of the eight you are currently carrying. There aren't even four prospects in the Flyers system who are remotely ready to handle that kind of load.
Somebody's gotta play defense next year. Schultz, out of all the guys I listed, is likely going to cost the least and, arguably, do the least harm at the price point he will have - AllInForFlyers
Re-sign Schultz as a UFA, after getting a pick for him. Or go after one of the other FAs. It's not a great market, but there's a few solid names there that can replace the mid level guys who could be dealt, Grossmann, Schenn or Schultz.
Again, it's not necessarily a mistake if Schultz is re-signed. For myself I'd rather wait and see if somebody offers a decent return, and leave options open. |

There are a number of good defenseman on the UFA list that would interest me. How many would be willing to sign a one or two year deal for around a 2M AAV? |

And that's why I don't see Schultz signing an extension now. His agent sees the market and what decent d-men get. Coming off of a bad season on a bad team, he got 1.25 mil for 1 year. I don't see him signing for 1-2 years and less than 2 mil today unless he doesn't believe he can keep his play up. In the offseason after testing the market, maybe. But if he gets extended now, I don't think anyone on this board would love what he gets. Again, not saying he gets close to MacDonald, but you do usually pay to keep a guy from testing the market. |

you think? - stayinthefnnet
Yeah, I do -- because they've tried it. This roster's not coming back, as-is. I think MJL's right sometimes in that cap concerns with the Flyers can be overblown, but I do think that if Umberger doesn't get bought out or if Lecavalier can't be moved and doesn't get bought out, then Schenn's cap hit is where you go next.
There are any number of cards that can be played, from Coburn or Grossmann or even a Read getting moved, certainly.
But if it were me, again, me, my checklist for the offseason is to address the $11.5 million tied up in Umberger, Lecavalier and Schenn.
If I were the GM, two of those salaries are going. Period |

The players I was referring to that interest me, are really in a different class then Schultz is as players, which is one reason why I don't see them signing a deal similar to what I think it will take to sign Schultz. I think Schultz would be open to re-signing here for security. If he can get a 2 year deal for a modest raise, I think he would re-sign. If his demands are too high and I'm wrong about that, then the Flyers can switch direction and trade him around the deadline for whatever they can get for him.

What do you consider a modest raise? From everything I read, it does sound like he likes the area and with 3 young kids would like a 2 year deal for the stability. |

I don't think there is any question that it's a strong possibility that the Flyers will look to address the issues with those players. I honestly believe that one of Schenn or Grossmann won't be back next year. The Flyers are going to try and move Lecavalier if they can get a deal they can live with, regardless of how well he plays the rest of the season. I don't think there is any doubt about that. A buyout of Umberger is also a possibility.
The Flyers have options open to them to gain some cap space if they need it. The question is what to do with it.

Sounds like the Eagles just Holmgren'd Howie Roseman and gave Chip Kelly personnel power. |

Needed to be done -- can't let a good coach who hasn't worn out his shelf life with the players get away
Nothing for or against Roseman -- drafting and free agency are inexact sciences. If everybody could do it, nobody would ever lose. But since that's the case, you don't just run the risk of discarding 10-win coaches just for the hell of it
