No. They weren't, bogie. Toews and Kane were. Smith was the GM when Keith and Crawford were drafted. Not sure about Seabrook but it was either a Smith or Pulford pick. - Elbows15
Tallon was an asst GM until 2005.
Seabrook was a Smith pick---I talked to him that evening in Florida , and didn't question the pick but said there sure were a lot of good forwards and even a big men there (Getzlaf in particular) and Smith who was honest to a tee, and never afraid to tell the truth if he thought you weren't a reporter, told me outright: The team has no prospects at defense so we have to continue to draft there.
Tallon MIGHT have been doing some scouting but Smith was GM.
- Mike Smith has drafted moderately to highly successful NHL players, most of whom are still playing:
Brent Seabrook
Duncan Keith
Dustin Byfuglien
Alexei Zhamnov
Igor Korolev
Nikolai Khabibulin
Keith Tkachuk
Nikolai Antropov
Kris Draper
Craig Anderson
Corey Crawford
Adam Burish
James Wisniewski
Tuomo Ruutu
Aaron Ward

I was able to catch a couple of games, including the elimination to the Russians. Schmaltz has top end skill and if he can get his game under control he might be a future top 6 option. He disappeared a lot, but showed flashes of his talent in the ozone that really stood out to me, especially towards the end of the game against Russia when he completely took over a few shifts.
Hayden though was the biggest bright spot. Loved his game. You described him perfectly. Would be a great add to this team if he pans out. - SimpleJack
Here's the thing with Schmaultz:
He shows this high end gift of being able to succeed in these high end plays, but after me watch the efforts at North Dakota he has a lot more game to grow, and I mean more than 60 minute efforts...he just hasn't generated as much offense from the "dazzle>" He has time.
I don't think the Hawk playyers were in anyway difference makers FOR the US but they really weren't the main reason they lost.
Themko just isn't that good. (Think Edmonton & their weak link: the goalteners)
and the kids on the defense all guys I consistently praised and OVER valued were they were going to get selected on draft day, they just didn't play well together in the short span of the tourney.
You need STRONG depth and timely scoring with a nice mix of emotion at the perfect times in World Junior.

The D was a train wreck in handling the puck exiting the zone. Their discipline sucked. All of their penalties were lazy stick penalties. The sorely lacked a leader on the back end. |

And this is where we agree. Shaw plays stand up hockey, and does what is necessary for his team. When you have turds running rampant and taking liberties, this shouldn't be Shaws job to handle him, although he did fine last time.. Remember the Bollig beat down last year on him? Like it or not, Carcillo has inherited this role. Does he deserve more or less ice time? Matter of perspective.
However, despite his shortcomings, he handles that role better than Bickell on the third line. Honestly, when he stood up to Wilsom on that cheap shot on Smith, what happened? Did he get hurt or for some strange reason, did Q bench him for this?
It's a matter of playing stand up hockey and being accountable. Nordstrom deserves time on the fourth line, I've been his strongest advocate. Carcillo deserves time on the third line especially in match ups like this one. Shaw shouldn't do it. Bickell won't.
Simple concept. Enjoy your evening.. - TexasFlood
That fight happened in the final 20 or so seconds of the game when it meant absolutely nothing. Bollig didn't deter Roussel from being a rat that entire game. Honestly baffled by you bringing that incident up as it weakens your argument. You know what probably hurt more than a punch to the face for Roussel? Hossa's ENG that iced the game and lost the Stars points in a race to barely make it into the playoffs.
Look, I'm not going to debate whether an ~enforcer is necessary in hockey today, but I think you're giving way too much credit to someone like Roussel. When the Hawks face the Stars, I worry about the likes of Benn and Seguin. We can agree to disagree. |

Yeah thanks. I read it the first time.
I like Hayden's game. I really like that he turned it up in the medal round. Thought he and Larkin were the best players on the ice for the US.
Motte just couldn't buy a goal and he took the first penalty against Russia.
Louis is a little waterbug with very nice hands and a lot of heart.
Schmaltz had flashes of brilliance and some moments where he was lost. |

I agree with you in the last three games Larkin and Hayden were the best Americans on the ice. Eichel was the biggest disappointment. To much hype about him. Bad passer and seems to always be out on the perimeter and loose the puck . He avoided the tough area like a plague in my opinion. - spanky
Giving him the C was a mistake. Put too much pressure on him. IMO.
Its been said that WJC is a 19 yr old tournament. Even Crosby struggled as a draft eligible player. |

It's kind of ironic that TT played so great in the tournament. He was the leading scorer in the tournament last year. Maybe TT will come out of his young shell and wind up playing himself on the team. Maybe the bell has rung for him! that woul really put us in a great position . |

No doubt. You'd see those legit plays Marchment would make, guy had a decent shot and then throw his knee out at a guy...definitely not cool.
Roussel is a bigtime dbag and was glad Shaw force fed him some knuckles. - HawkintheD
What fight were you guys watching? Shaw is the 1 that had to sit out after getting his bell rung! The Hawks need a big Bonified 4th line enforcer type guy who can play about ten minutes a game, not hurt you and actually WIN fights .(Matt Martin!), until then, the subtle little pushes and BIOTCH slaps after whistles and behind the refs back will continue.Don't know why the Bowmans continue to turn a blind eye towards that situation. Save the Bickell bull sh. It also. &Seabs needs to be on the ice. I thought before they signed Carcillo, that Brandon Mashintor all but had that role all locked up. |

The one where Shaw kicked his ass. Twice. |

TT should be with with Richards &Kane to compliment his skill, wasting him on the 4th line, Sooner or later Sharp will make his way up to the top 6 also, who drops down? Hmmm? Saad? |

Ok if you say so, I was sitting in the level 100 for that game , it looked like a pretty even fight to me, both guys got some shots in, but if I recall Shaw had to sit out a couple because he took 1 on the beezer.Don't think any one kicked ass in that scrap.Seems like all these types of guys like Rousell are considered so called douche bags on this site because they don't play for the Hawks. I would welcome a kid like that who could play, not hurt you, score some goals and hold court when needed. You seem like a sensible guy & know what I mean. Give me Dominic Rousell on the Hawks 3 rd or 4th line and you wouldn't need guys like Bickell & Carcillo tying up cash & roster spots is all I am trying to say. |

Rousel is a douchebag because he is dangerous and has no regard for other players. I have no problem with tough, physical players who can play.
Rousel will end someone's career with the poop he does. There is no place in the game for guys like him.
This isn't a little face wash here and there. Its sticking your leg out on a guy, butt ending guys, and that sort of thing. The truth is nothing will stop him from doing that but the league office. |

Yeah that's why i figure you'll see Carcillo dressed every game TT is.
Versteeg is gone for six weeks and this is the guy most were sending away in the summer, and now they are lamenting his absences, you gotta love it. - wiz1901

This!
Also, if Mashinter is one of your wingers, Q isn't likely able to ice 4 lines and you go back to the issue of why they were unable to repeat last year, forward depth and unreliable 3rd pairing. |

Even if you refuse to accept that Carcillo has a role on an NHL team, numerous NHL head coaches have shown that they do—not that THAT matters. Well, yeah, it does, because Joel Quenneville, the head coach of the Blackhawks has too.
So, without getting into the timeworn debate of what Carcillo's role is, can we not agree that whatever it is, the 175 pound (and that's probably generous) Teravainen, with his gifted hands and vision, is not suited to Carcillo's role?
At least for me, its not a TT vs. Carcillo thing, its a Nordstrom vs. Carcillo thing. I just think Nordstrom brings the sandpaper but gives the the 4th line a second checking and potential 4th scoring line.
I've said before, not going to get too out of whack about it, we'll see who's playing on the 4th line and 3rd D pair come playoff time.
I have two issues: Nordstrom - Carcillo and Dahlbeck - Rundblad |

Agree and a better defensive player too than Car Bomb. I'd like to see more of Dahlbeck at some point as well but I think Rundblad has been decent and responded to getting some consistent ice time.
