The name that keeps being brought up between the Leafs and Kings is Mike Richards, who is under control through 2019. Which means, in order for there to be a move, the Kings would have to accept a big unwanted contract in return.

I would like to see Dion Phaneuf in LA. I think he would really be a nice fit for the Kings given that Slava Voynov has killed his NHL career and Robyn Regehr will likely be gone. You slide in Phaneuf onto a blue line with guys like Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez and Green, not bad!

From a Maple Leafs point of view, I would like to also get Brayden McNabb in return. McNabb is just 23 and has an edge to his game. I like what I have seen this season so far from him and he has been a fairly reliable guy on that line. He also has a pretty powerful shot that goes overlooked a lot with guys like the ones I mentioned above on the team. In Toronto, McNabb could get a lot of time on both the PP and PK.

If another player is thrown in, maybe Carter Ashton to LA. He fits the Kings style, and could even be an upgrade over someone like Jordan Nolan. Ashton is an unknown still, and only 23, could turn into something decent still. Not sure how he fits on the Leafs, but the Kings are a good fit for his style, which would be a bottom six spot.

Regarding a deal with Colorado, we always hear the name Ryan O'Reilly. The Avs are having a poor season, with a lot of the same issues hurting the Leafs. I wouldn't want to make a deal with them unless the names Landeskog or MacKinnon are involved. I want someone with accountability and who can provide some leadership. I think a deal with the Kings (something like Richards and McNabb for Phaneuf and Ashton) makes a lot of sense for both teams and they both fill some needs.

I disagree with most of this. I almost thought this was some sarcasm. Not trying to troll you but I just thought that was a lot of paragraphs I read that I wish I didnt.

LA isn't going to have 14 mill into Phanuef and Doughty.

Nolan is a much better NHL player at this point than Ashton, the admitted unknown. No way LA does that.

Colorado isnt having any conversations regarding trading MacK or Lando. Duchene neither. The fact they are trading ROR is nuts because of what a quality player he is that they just refuse to pay (or he's pissed about his contract negiations and wants to leave).

For Toronto to grab ROR they will have to outbid some other teams which means there will be good quality going back, unless Colorado complete blows the deal for whatever reason.

Good God, the Leafs are stuck with the likes of Phanuef, Clarkson, Lupul for a very....very long time.

If they offered teams clarkson and 10 1st round picks....they still wouldnt take him!!!!

this guy cant skate let alone play hockey!! oh, and Phanuef is no better

Come on, Phaneuf is a really solid D-Man.

Well, Toronto needs some guys with grit and who can provide some leadership. Mike Richards is a nice start. Both teams get rid of extravagant contracts, and both could fit each other's needs well with Phaneuf going the other way.

Not sure about where Franson/Gardiner/Kessel/JVR could go. If they keep Gardiner and Kessel, then the team would need more grit and hustle guys like Santorelli and Komarov. Solid role players basically. If they traded away those two, then look for a bit more speed and scoring. Kessel will always be an elite goal scorer and he can be made to be more of a defensive player than JVR I think. Randy Carlyle may not be the right fit if the team keeps Kessel. The team will need a more defensive minded coach (too bad they were not able to bring in someone like Barry Trotz, who is making a very loose Capitals team in seasons past a tougher defensive team to play against this season. He is also making Ovechkin be more accountable.)

The core of this team, if things happen like I hope...they are going to be Bernier, Kadri, Bozak, Holland and either Kessel or JVR and either Gardiner or Franson. Role players like Santorelli, Komarov, Panik are going to fill some big roles too. There is a ton of work that needs to be done of course.

I would hang onto Joffrey Lupul. The guy is way too much of an injury concern to be dealt I would imagine. You either keep his contract and injury issues or keep Clarkson's. I would much rather just do away with Clarkson altogether. In fact, I wish he would be one of the injured players coming off the rough Boston game. When in the lineup, at least Lupul is doing something on the ice and is a solid player and provides minimal leadership on a team with basically none. You get nothing from Clarkson, period. I doubt you would be able to trade Clarkson at all either, so a buyout after this season is most logical.

I can see a lot of changes happening soon...quicker the better. If the right moves are made sooner, then there is still a chance this team could get into the playoffs yet.

Mike Richards? Good lord. he looks finished. How is that a good start for the Leafs?

People can talk about Phaneuf all they want but Phaneuf at 7 million per destroys the value of Richards at 5.75 million per.

Why would Toronto give up so much for a player who has already declared he is going to test the market as UFA. ROR is going to a Stanley Cup contender if he goes anywhere.

ROR is not going to get Coloado much in a trade.

We see this constantly. The expectations of what the team will get back always dwarf the reality of the trade.

Just look at the Perron return.

ROR>Perron

It will take at least an NHL player and a 1st to get ROR.

Perron isn't UFA.

And the point is, you';re not going to get a Kadri and a first for him.

Not at all what we are saying. Toronto should not give up what the asking price is and will get back. The Avs will get a 1st, a top 4 D and a roster player for him. Remember, you only have him for 1 more year, then he is going UFA. That is why he is going to a Cup contender, or a team that thinks they are.

Florida can make a move for ROR. They can move Gudbrandson. They can also sign him to a long term deal.

I was just clarifying ROR's trade value compared to Perron's. I don't think ROR is a good fit for Toronto.

Florida would be a pretty good fit. I also see Washington and Nashville as teams that could use an upgrade at the 2C spot. Don't know if either have the assets to make it happen but Florida sure does.
