Here's the problem: Short of a blockbuster trade, the Flyers won't get picks or prospects of any significance for the names people keep putting out there as trade targets. - bmeltzer
Bearing in mind that they got a 3rd for Meszaros last season...
Coburn could get them a late 1st.
Schultz could get them a 3rd.
Those are significant picks for a team that has no 2nd rounder and doesn't have it's own third rounder. |

I strongly agree. But, this may be the year that a really smart GM really cashes in by going the other way. This draft has legendary expectations attached to it. Nobody wants to deal picks. Everyone wants gain more picks. Selling at the top can be a smart market strategy. If you have a potential top 5 pick (maybe win the lottery), you are going to want a huge return. - spatso

They will get picks. Mike Weaver got a fifth last year.
They aren't good together, but individually, they have a few guys they will be able to move. |

I think all aspects have to be taken into consideration. Looking at Wayne Simmonds, first of all I don't consider him a PP specialist. He is capable of producing at ES, just as he has done in the past. If they have a playmaking wing or center to play with Simmonds, which would give the team a better forward mix, does that help Simmonds and the line he plays on produce better at ES? Don't label Wayne Simmonds and trade him based on the team not having the right mix of players. - MJL
Was it a popular trade when the Flyers moved Recchi to Montreal in '95? Or did that deal help them moving forward? There aren't a whole lot of attractive pieces on this team unless your moving your youth core of Schenn, Couturier, and Laughton or your two best players in Giroux and Voracek.
I am not saying Simmonds is Recchi but he could be a piece or a pice in a package to bring back value to make this club better. |

Here's the problem: Short of a blockbuster trade, the Flyers won't get picks or prospects of any significance for the names people keep putting out there as trade targets. They won't get current NHL roster players of any significance back, either. Meanwhile, the FA markets have becoming increasingly mediocre -- yet overpriced -- because of teams signing guys to pre-emptive extensions.
I am all for acquiring draft picks in volume and hanging onto your own picks when possible but I also know the odds of a pick panning out into an impact NHL player are not great and even when you do hit a home run, the player is almost always going to need multiple years from his draft year to start making that impact. Hell, even most first-round picks need several years.
I think the best course of action here is patience, which includes not holding a fire sale strictly for the sake of change. Do the remake slowly as moves make sense. - bmeltzer
I don't think a fire sale is ever smart unless you plan on being a bottom feader for the next 3 years....But some times a trade can wake a team up....the same way a firing of a coach can have the same effect. I don't think outside of Giroux and Vorecek the Flyers have any player that would be considered off limits in a trade...
Its a tough spot for Hextall for sure. Unfortunately the Flyers can't buy them selves out of Holmgren's mistakes....When I say Holmgrens mistakes....I talk of the whole hockey department....Pro scouts included. The cap era has forced teams into fiscal responsibility....one or two big mistakes and your stuck.

damnit cant check teams cap to fabricate trade proposals - JoeRussomanno
You can use nhlnumbers as a start. So, to start, how about:
To Winnpieg:
Brayden Schenn, Braydon Coburn, 2015 1st rounder ($7M cap hit)
To Philadelphia:
Jacob Trouba, Nikolaj Ehlers, Tobias Enstrom ($7.577M)

The problem is that they can't be worse.
You are last on the penalty kill. - AllInForFlyers
Kimmo played less than half of the time the Flyers were short handed last season. And the PK did not collapse when he was off the ice. So why has it totally fallen apart this season? Because the coaches have changed it to be more aggressive and the result has been constant open lanes for cross ice passes and players getting hopelessly out of position. But the coaches are too dumb or too stubborn to go back to what worked just a year ago.
There is a lot more wrong with the Flyers team than the roster. Two former players were hired as coaches and they have shown themselves to be completely out of their depth at this level. |

General manager Ron Hextall inherited a defense full of untenable contracts - ones that don't begin to expire until 2016. - johndewar
He also inherited a team that's been utter poop at ES going on three seasons now.
Last season's PO appearance was a mirage. They aren't that much worse this year... they're just getting the results they deserve. Routinely falling behind, over-relying on special teams and goaltending, consistently-poor team play, not being able to mount any kind of pressure until the other team's taken their foot off the gas, kids running hot/cold... this poop ain't some new revelation.
Kimmo and Hartsy might have helped them to the tune of a handful more points, but they'd still be hot trash as a whole. |

In theory and/or NHL15, that's true. But the package for star player type trades are few and far between. The most recent example is probably the James Neal for Hornqvist/Spaling trade, and I really can't think of one before then in recent memory. |

I don't think the return that SJ got for Murray will happen again any time soon with advanced stats and possession-driven hockey gaining even more steam. A player like that maybe gets you a 3rd rounder now. Also, when you factor in the depth of this draft, a Murray-type dman doesn't get you a 2nd. - NickTheKid87
Yeah, I think somebody like Methot will still get hugely overrated in the trade market... but Grossmann/Schenn are going to be tough to move, and their relative value to 2015 draft picks probably isn't what most people think. |

I think Recchi was their leading scorer at the time. They badly needed help on D, which is why they reached out for Desjardins.
I don't remember if it was popular or not, but I do remember being surprised. And I remembered Desjardins, Leclair, and Dionne from the Habs' Cup run in '93. I also remember thinking that Gilbert Dionne could be a steal, not realizing what pairing Leclair with Lindros would do.

The market could change enough between now and the TDL...that Coburn could garner a first round pick...it depends on who the buyers are and how many teams stay in contention including the Flyers...Teams will over pay even more if there's no one else out there or the price for someone else is higher then they want to pay.... |

The draft is pretty deep so I'm not sure teams will be willing to part with 1st rounders so easily. I suppose it depends on a number of factors. If Coburn could net a 1st, they'd almost have to pull the trigger. If they have to package Schultz and a 3rd for a 2nd, I would probably do that too. I would like to see them get back into the 2nd round. |

I disagree with Bill in this regard: While you can't get rid of everyone, the Flyers can't be married to players who, at this point, look like they are going to finish in the lower third of the league, at a minimum.
I'm not advocating trading difference-makers, or even players like Sean Couturier, who has done some good things and is still young.
But you have to listen on, what, 15 guys on the roster, if anyone inquires. And if a deal makes sense, then I feel it should be done, because I do think upgrades to certain areas on this roster will be able to be found. - AllInForFlyers

Given Berube's affinity for Grossmann, I think the asking price may be more than teams will want to give up. Schenn on the other hand is still young and teams may be willing to take a flier out on him for a 2nd or 3rd. |
