The difference is mainly that we can't afford any of those players when we have two of the best centers in the game, and if we could afford anyone of those they are on entry level/bridge contracts and we most likely would have to pay more for a good player with a good contract. Like you said it's not really an upgrade especially when you figure in what would be needed to even get someones third center who is "better" than Sutter. Better would mean 2 more goals, 4 assists in the regular season. Marginal difference that costs assets. - znagle
I think it really comes back to team performance v individual performance stats. How well do the Pens play with Sutter 3c? Also, compare our line against the other contenders & their 3c. How much did it cost the Kings last year for their 3c? Hawks? Bruins? It's possible that the days of a cheap 3c are over. As the play becomes more developed then running more effective lines is required. Higher cap, higher paid players in positions not just individuals. |

I was born in '93, so I've had about the same amount of time if not less than you. Welcome aboard
Also, get use to advanced stats homie. Its RW's bread and butter. Not that that's bad or anything - Victoro311
Cheers Vic. I don't mind the stats being used although my understanding of them is limited. I played a sport where stats are used so I understand the love from some with them.
I do read RW's blog as a must do every morning (my time) & think he is much unloved for his efforts. I for 1 am a supporter & enjoy the banter on here with the regulars which of course you are. |

Thanks Bart's, I'm looking forward to the challenge. I have seen that you guys can talk yourselves into everything you need in a player. As much as I loved seeing 66 & 68 playing for the Pens I think that 68 colours are best not be be Black, white & golden/yellow/Vegas anything/gold of any type/Urine yellow, for the foreseeable future - sorry.

Nice to see we get some hockey tonight. Hockey is my drug of choice with coffee and wine rounding out the big three. My guess is Martin is playing and Perron should be a little more settled in. Looking for more cohesive and determined effort tonight. I imagine it may be a bit chippy as Pens have been a bit frustrated of late and Boston very much if not more so, lately. |

Nobody asked for sugar coating.
The issue is that some folks who share their opinions eventually become more concerned with being right than being accurate. The pro-Goc, anti-Sutter vendetta is motivated by the former.
I'm only saying this because I've been there before. I used to blog at a site dedicated to another Pittsburgh team in another sport, and I had to give it up after it started sucking the fun out of being a fan. Arguments like this are never ending - both sides can indubitably find endless evidence in support of their opinion, it becomes consumptive. - hardnosed
I know you mean well, but the final thought made me think of this.

Yeah the days of top 9 are well over, you need a great top 9 and good 4th that can handle a shift and not get run all over, while having a solid D and a good tender. Sutter isn't going to score 40 goals or put up 80 points on the third line behind arguably the top 2 players in the game and that is fine I don't think anyone is expecting that. He produces average for a 3c, plays good all around and has a perfect cap hit for us. His value is also inflated a little meaning we can ship him off eventually for a high pick, which we can then use to grow our own center talent along with out other picks. We can't afford another Jordan Staal type of player as much as everyone wishes unless we want to get rid of Letang, which I can't believe people wanted to get rid of in the first place |

Penguin fans expect every 3rd line center to produce like 1/2 line centers. It's somewhat amusing/ignorant because well simply put if they produce like 1/2 line centers than they would price themselves out of the lineup.
Anyways, love the Perron trade. I was hoping the Pens would get him back when he was traded from the Blues. |

Yep...love this trade too. Agreed with Ryan from the start on how this guy was a great trade target for the Pens.
