So you think that one isolated off season incident affects how you see Giroux as a captain?
Here's where I think we truly differ, and please correct me if I'm wrong. My opinion on how I rate Giroux as a captian is based on how Giroux leads. Neither of us can factually know how Giroux leads off the ice, so I base it on how he leads on the ice, which is what I can see. As I said before, I don't know what else Giroux can do as a leader on the ice, that he's not already doing.
Your opinion seems to factor in team results, reputation, and longevity into the mix. - MJL
No, team results should have nothing to do with the captain. Neither should longevity. But his reputation on and off the ice should have some bearing on it. |

yeah. for sure. its hard to rank something so subjective via quantifiable means, but he seems to meet the grade.
no, he isnt that grizzled messier type, but there really arent a lot of those in the league right now. and the league now trends towards making the best player on the team the captain (whether right or wrong) and doing it from a young age. |

Adam Larsson has been leading the devils in ice time over the last week or so and is racking up the assists as well while playing solid 5 vs 5. I don't think that's saying much for Deboerr |

I hate the "best player is the captain" trend. As much as I hate him, I always thought Dale Hunter was a great captain in the mid-late 90s. Dustin Brown is far from the best player on his team, and he does a great job.
That being said, Giroux is the best choice for captain on this team right now. He's a fine captain. And like you said, there are very few of the Messier/Pronger types in the league right now, or even the Andreychuk types. All I said was, given my pick, I'd rather have one of those. That somehow became me saying Giroux was a horrible captain. |

I was at a Whalers game in 1992. The fact an NHL team was playing in that poopbox of an arena was comical. - PLindbergh31

Who has implied that you said Giroux was a horrible captain? I don't think that's what you were saying. I'm just debating and discussing what factors I think should be looked at in judging Giroux as a captain. I don't think comparing Giroux to Pronger or Messier should be a part of it. I only think that looking at how he leads should be how he is judged. And I don't know what else Giroux could do as captain. |

I don't even know how to put it. But if a guy like, well, let's say Toews, came out a made a "There will be a game 7" type of prediction, people would tend to believe it more than if Giroux or Crosby said it. Guys like Toews, Messier, or Pronger have that very stern quality where they seemed able to will themselves and their team to win, I guess, and I don't think Giroux can, right now. I think he's a good captain and a great player, but I don't think he can make his team win by sheer will power. |

He recently said it again, too. Said it during the summer (even after Mason nearly stole that playoff series against the Rangers) and said it again just recently in an NJ.com interview. - bmeltzer
