I know it will never happen, but would you do, right now:
Couturier, Simmonds, Coburn, 2015 1st rounder
for Shea Weber
Again, will not happen, but would you? - jmatchett383

NSH has got to be the best, recently: Josi, Weber, Hamhuis, Suter, Ellis, Jones, Franson, Klein, Ryan Mother(frank)ing Parent, etc. - Tomahawk
I think defense is going to be to hockey what pitching is to baseball.
Draft them in bunches and hope some of them pan out.
You can see the premiums paid to guys at the NHL level who play the blueline even at a competent level. Teams are going to look for ways to reduce that payout and the best way is to draft, develop, and control those players (contractually) as long as you possibly can before they go somewhere else and get paid. |

A group of overpaid players who are able to perform at a high level up until their mid-40's even when they're fat and out of shape who need Tommy John surgery once every 3 years? |

Tempting, but no. I'd have a death grip on that 1st rounder. |

No team with an "elite proven mid to late 20something defensemen" is going to trade said player for a draft pick, MAYBE for the 1st overall. |

Nope. I like Seth Jones, but he hasn't done it for long enough for me yet, and that 1st rounder is looking like a 20+ pick at this point. |

Not quite like that.
I mean insofar as the premium paid for pitching is over and above what you would pay for a hitter.
Look at how bad Luke Schenn is and look at how much money he makes relative to some of the forwards on this team....Wayne Simmonds, for example.
Are Luke Schenn's contributes commensurate with Wayne Simmonds'? Probably not, but since Luke Schenn plays defense, he gets paid what he gets paid.
And despite the fact that I think Luke Schenn will not be a Flyer after this contract expires, by virtue of the fact that the dude's righthanded and can skate backwards....I'm guessing he'll get another contract from somebody.

Think of it from Nashvilles point of view. Including Fiala might be over the top for them but getting a forward like Jake for two seasons would be huge for a team that's already one of the best in hockey |

Flyers will have the same lineup as Tues., except MacDonald is out and L. Schenn in. Berube said it's a matter of size/physicality. |
