That would be a pretty good pairing. Both big and physical and EJ could allow Phaneuf to play more of a "rover" style defense. Phaneuf would unfortunately be the top option in Edmonton and would have nobody to help him out.
I don't know if Toronto would keep salary or pursue a team with a bad contract and try to get a top tier prospect if they tried shipping him out. Maybe Lecavalier and Laughton in Philadelphia? - Dangles13
Phaneuf-Fayne might be a good pairing at even strength. Give Phaneuf heavy PP. |

I would be ok with bringing in Phaneuf for an ok package, he'd become our best all around defender and Fayne could be his Gunnarsson.

I don't know who will take Kessel and Phaneuf...the pipe dream proposals of trading those guys for younger guys on the ELC won't happen, no team is going to give up a 950k young gun and take on 7m+ in Cap space.
Guys like Clarkson, Lupul, Bozak, and maybe JVR are more likely to be sold off for dirt cheap - DDM-Coga
I'm hoping that the Blackhawks can pick up JVR and a good prospect for Sharp in the off season. Chicago will need to shed some salary this Summer. |

The big thing though is that defensemen are so valuable and not many are available that the market would be (frank)ed. It is a bad contract but some gm was able to get two 2nd round picks for Douglas Murray. - Dangles13
That would have been us
And I actually thought he was what we needed at the time
One of the big reasons I don't value "shut down" d-men very highly. |

They would be crazy to move him bc hes young, on a great contract, and has shown at times he can dominate. I think if they keep on spiralling down they will be crazy enough to do it.
I asked some leaf fans today if they would move him and they said yes bc hes lazy and a Me First guy too, but I think thats a bit of fan frustration and expecting too much out of everyone of their guys |

If they were able to move Lecavalier and his contract then I bet they would do what it takes to make room. Umberger for a pick. - Dangles13
Umberger is poop with 2 yr at 4.5 cap hit.,,,,Flyers have some notorious contracts |

He was at one point a useful player but his skating was just (frank)ed. Crazy overpay but that's what happens when teams are desperate.

not at that time of their careers. "Shut down" D-men just always seem to fall off a cliff around 33 years of age. Just the toll of those minutes makes them a fossil and its impossible to jump back from.
Thats why I think Methot would be a risky long term signing this summer. |

Yeah, went in to win now mode
I did like the physicality he brought, but damn he was a pylon. Despres is bringing the hits, but can actually skate and has some offensive potential |

He'd be happy in Chicago because his brother TVR just started playing with the big club this year and has surprised everyone with his poise and skill set for such a young player. Unfortunately, his knee got cracked by a slap shot and probably ended his season. |

Those kinds of players just don't have a long shelf life. They can battle in front of the net like a boss but once they lose their youthful speed they are pretty (frank)ed. |
