Umberger's buyout is around $1.6mm for two years and then $1.5mm for two more.

Vinny's is significant. His buyout, if memory serves, is $2.33mm for two years, then $2mm in year three, with three final years at $833K or so. It's not exact, but without capgeek there's not another resource that spells it out exactly-that I'm aware of.

Honestly the best thing that could happen is these guys play better and at least give the Flyers some options.

haha yeah, exactly why i kind of shirked responsibility for the calculation.

so youd be looking roughly 4 mil in dead space the next 2 years, and 3.5 after that. after that it gets pretty easy.

It's not poor management that Kimmo Timonen suffered blood clots, or that a player that has been so important to the Flyers in the past, Matt Read, is having an abysmal season. The Couturier is getting killed out there, not producing much offense, and giving up a lot of possession time. Also not poor management with how inconsistent a number of players have played, not to mention the team wide issues with intensity.
Not saying there haven't been mistakes, but I know that this team should be better then it is.

- MJL

Lets continue to blame the players for inconsistency, put up stupid signs and have a merry go round of coaches/philosophies.

The constant is not the boys on the ice or the men behind the bench. As poor as they may be.

It's poor management when your hoping or planning for a 40 year old on a one year deal to anchor your d....can you say short sighted!!!!

Is it good management that has assembled this embarrassing team ?

I think that ship has sailed. What GM in their right mind takes on those contracts without the Flyers having to give up good assets just to unload them.

Admit your stupidity, buy them out, and give the minutes to kids or players who can contribute something worthwhile. Dowd or Hall gave this team more for much less money.

its just hard for me to look at things in a vacuum. i do agree.

if you magically put doughty on this team, they would be a playoff team, despite of, with, or without, anything to do with vinny or umby.

but in a cap league, having that much money tied up makes it harder to do other things. i do agree with your diagnosis of the main issue, although i just think its a little harder to completely isolate the influence that vinny and umby on the roster has.

- stayinthefnnet

The Flyers will have avenues available to them to deal with Umberger and Lecavalier. It's not going to be cost free, as any buyout, demotion, or retained salary deal with come with a cost obviously. Making those moves combined with roster turnover, adding younger players on EL deals, and the cap increase will give the Flyers all the flexibility they need for next year.
Pretty much everyone that's critical is signed for next season. The fans don't want the Flyers to wade into any big free agent contracts this off season, and have agreed with Hextall's mantra of exercising patience and building through the draft. So what's the problem? The Flyers have more then enough cap space to put a good team on the ice. This year is disapointing for sure, but it's just a bump in the road in my opinion. And all the drama over cap issues is just that. Flyers are fine cap wise in my opinion. So many ways to work with the cap.

It is. Fortunately, Lecavalier finally realized that he's going to need to break a sweat and produce to stay in the line up. Still isn't playing anywhere near his salary. Neither are Umberger, MacDonald, Grossmann, Luke Schenn, Coburn or Read.

In some cases you have a guy playing markedly below past levels. But not in most cases. Lecavalier had a poor year last year. He repeated that this year until his pride got stung. Umberger was a buyout candidate in Columbus. MacDonald is a healthy scratch tonight. Grossmann & Schenn have played similarly to how they did for large stretches of last season.

Apparently they also think Amac isn't giving them their monies worth either?? What contract are you worried about ? There's a laundry list of reasons why the Flyers suck....these contracts aren't done anytime soon...theirs a reason why alarm bells are going off.....these BAD contracts aren't going anywhere soon.

- landros 2

One game. Flyers are fine cap wise. Not worried about any of the existing contracts. Alarm bells are going off for the same way they do every season in Flyerdom. Cap panic.

It is not good it will come at the expense of their prime but the team is paying the price for years of not drafting or developing well. Now it's started but those take time before we see the rewards.
- ob18

I can live with poor years. Nothing wrong with that in a cap era. There will be windows that open and close.

I wont waste my time watching a product with players like MacDonald, LeCavalier and Umberger to entertain myself. Put some cheap FA vets with energy out there, hell a guy like Adam Hall was more enjoyable to watch or some youthful enthusiasm sprinkled in. Its why I enjoy the juniors.

Im not wasting my time watching a crew like this. Loyalty to what? I've seen less than half of their games this year, don't feel bad for a second.

Certainly. Nobody myself included disagrees that the Flyers aren't getting their money's worth out of Umberger and Lecavalier.

I did not like the contract they gave him, but it was not poor management to bring Timonen back.

Anything to stay competitive. The cause of this mess.

Its okay though, things will improve, or one has to hope. Even with Holmgren and Snider in the fold. Cant imagine they stay stupid, arrogant and oblivious to current times forever. This year shows promise.

The real test will be when they start to come out of this hole. Can they hold back the orgasm and let it grow more naturally instead of quick moves to try and get a cup? That will be the tell. Transition times are these.

I don't understand how it's "easy" to fix the cap issues. How many other GMs are going to trade for those contracts? The Flyers will have at least 2 or 3 serious raises facing them in the summer of 2016. How do multiple buyouts affect that?

Hell, Right now they're about $6mm over the cap with LTIR for Timonen & Pronger.

That's false. They were not the only two players or situations that were discussed. And he failed to look at a lot of issues that are problems this year. He only talked about what served his narrow agenda.

It's panic, and overreactions. This season is just a bump in the road.
