Oh - Happy Days.
Always fun to beat the Bruins. Hope for more of this today. - Moose_15
Here is a small excerpt from Simon Gagne's 3 1/2 hour interview with Jay Greenberg for Jay's upcoming 50th Anniversary of the Flyers (dual Full Spectrum re-release and a second volume from 1996 onward) history that will come out in 2017.
JG: What do you remember about the Flyers bench in Game 4? I know you had your own issues physically, but did the team still think it could it win?
SG: I remember that the one reason I came back is that the doctor said to me that I couldn't make my foot worse by trying to play. So I decided to try.
But a second reason is that, even after game three -- and I was watching the game -- I was thinking 'We're better than that." Even when we were down three-nothing, yeah, guys are disappointed but we were confident. Nobody was said, "Oh, we can't win now. We're done." It wasn't like. Guys felt, you know, we can't win four games in one night but we can win tonight. The guys felt confident about this, too. Every guy, you know?
We felt like we could be the one who is up three-nothing right now instead of them. That's what makes things like that [comeback] happen in sports. You see something and you just feel like you can accomplish this. It brings a team together. So that's the other reason I tried to come back. I felt like we could do this if we all pull together. Game four was the start of something.
JG: In Game 7, you are down 3-0. Lavy calls a timeout. I'm watching the game at home and I'm thinking he called the timeout one goal too late.
SG: Personally, one thing that stick on my mind, was when Milan Lucic scored, it was 3-0. Like 10 minutes into the game. He cut in front of the net and he was talking [trash] to us like, "How do you like that? You [bleepin'] guys are done!" We got pissed off. It backfired on him. Because, if he just skates away, maybe we got guys who feel down, like, "Well, we did our best. We made a good comeback but now it's too hard. It's 3-0 already. Now my legs feel heavy." Stuff like that.
But when Lucic did that, we got energy. We got mad. We got pissed off. So when Lavy called timeout, he was saying, "Let's just score one goal this period. One goal and we're going to be OK." We all felt that, too.
So van Riemsdyk scores and now it's 3-1 by the end of the period. Just like we wanted. In the second period, we get another one back and we see we are getting stronger and stronger. Now we tie the game....
JG: Yes.. I remember the way Danny came around the net.
SG: Right. Came around the net and he just wasn't going to let anybody stop him. And it hit a stick and then went up. So now we've got all the momentum. You know, but the big thing really was, was getting that first goal. Because when that happen(ed), everything we did in the series, it come(s) back to us. We felt like we know we can beat them. We know it's possible. By the time we get it tied, we almost feel relieved, like this is gonna happen. And it happened.
JG: Was your goal in Game 7 the biggest one you ever scored, in your mind?
SG: Well, if I have to tell you in my whole career, coming back like that against Boston is something that's almost impossible to do. To think about what we did is crazy, just crazy. For me, maybe I'm coming back and just playing to try and help the team after not doing, really, nothing for a week and a half because of the foot. But I'm not just playing. I'm able to jump in and be a factor. That was almost too good to be true. So, yeah, that's maybe my very best memory as a Flyer. Not just that series. Not just Game 7. But that whole playoffs.
After that, we're going up against Montreal. It's always fun to play against the Montreal Canadiens. We felt really good going into this series, lots of energy. We played really good, too, and we win. So now we're going to the Final.
It was a really good series. We could have won. So that's the one thing that's sad for me, not winning that Cup for Philly. Losing Game Six in overtime, that was tough.
JG: That Game 7 goal in Boston, you had a whole lot of net staring at you. Were you ever worried there was a little too much time and space?
SG: No, no, no. I wasn't thinking about that at all. I was just thinking to shoot as hard as I can and as quick as I can. I was definitely not thinking there's too much net. Rask was still there. What mixed him up was the deflection. He was there but his defenseman kind of blocked it. So he was going for that, and the puck goes right to me. But I wasn't thinking too much about anything but to get off a quick shot and shoot as hard as I can.
JG: It is often like that? In other words, you aren't trying to be too careful.
SG: Yeah, absolutely. Because, a lot of times when you score a goal, you're surprised. A lot of times it's not where you are trying to shoot the puck. You want to shoot kind of around there but to put the puck just where you want it -- you know, one small spot -- doesn't really happen too much. You just shoot for a bigger area and maybe it goes in and maybe the goalie saves it.

Thanks for the updates Bill. It's nice to hear about how the Phantoms, and other guys are doing.
Any news on when White will return to the Flyers? With the Bruins tonight, I have a feeling that we will get pushed around quite a bit. I was amazed to hear that some of the Flyers were afraid of Ekblad, and I could see that fear of the Caps Wilson during the last game. I was used to the "Old" Flyers that were tough. They might lose a game, but they would make you pay for the win. Now, nobody goes to the crease, or clears out our own crease. Nobody is afraid of the once tough Flyers anymore. I think that the only other team that I can remember that played like that was the horrible '06 team. Anyway, it's difficult to watch. - OrangeAndBlack1
Where did you hear that the Flyers were afraid of Ekblad? The Flyers played one of their more competitive games against the Caps Thursday night. I didn't see any type of fear from the Flyers at all.

Ba-Ba-Brooby is going to insert that physical demon Rinaldo in the lineup today. He will pull Chara's jersey over his head and pound him like a drum. |

Dude, they'll need to win 27 of the next 41 to have a 50-50 shot at the playoffs. The lottery pick is safe. The top 8....might be in danger. |

I'm completely resigned to the fact the Flyers won't sniff one of the top two picks, but I still think we can get top 5!

In some ways Hanafin or Kylington would be the best case scenario for this team.
Then again. If you win the lottery you could trade that pick for any player in the league just about. |

We have to be in that top 5. We are long overdue for some good luck. Who knows what can happen... That 5th pick could very well end up being a top 2. Just saying... We are due some good luck |

AFAIK, Reebok's design team actually handles all the league's special event jerseys (and some of the team ones, too). They're bowing to themselves.

he was one of the woes, my friend.....many of us thought he was actually deceased the way he was playing when in the line up. i, for one, am really surprised that a player sucked while here and then went elsewhere and is suddenly fine....... |

One of thoughts reading the excerpt from the Gagne interview is that Milan Lucic didn't just recently become a tool. Sounds like he's always been kind of a tool. |
