We don't end up with Zhitnik then though too.
It's a slippery slope but IMO it might be one of the worst(if not the worst) trades in team history. - dadeadhead
bleacher says it's the barrasso trade
I think the fuhr trade was the worst in sabres history followed by the Calle Johansson trade |

To be fair I think you have to remember the context of the time. We were coming off of years of playoff failure and every year we wanted to have a scapegoat at the end of the year. We had already run out all of the other "stars" from the 80's teams. Andreychuk was the last one to go and the fans were generally happy to see him go. It wasn't til he moved that his career picked up again. I am not defending the trade - I just want to point out that there is another side to it. - Slump Buster
disagree his was still better then a ppg player
that trade turned the sabres into a 1 line team |

People forget how good of a defender ol Zhitnik was.
Couldn't hit the broad side of the barn with his shot unless it was his teammates ear. - dadeadhead
He was an absolute Horse on both ends of the ice. Big, fast, decent passer, terrible shot. |

Malarchuk's career seemed to be revived until the injury.
And we did get Mr Hobey Baker out of that deal. |

I've always thought the Ray Shepard trade/giveaway was right up there. We have a rookie winger that scores 38 goals and we give him away? |

He was in his 3rd year but agreed.
Thought it had more to do with "off ice" issues. |

Yup, you're right. I remember Paul Coffey saying that his hands are so good that they should have been in a museum.

Speaking of hanging numbers in the rafters, am I the only one embarassed by the President's Trophy banner? It might as well say "We haven't won any cups". |

It beats the "Postseason Participant" banner Nashville has (or at least had at one point) hanging up in its rafters. |

fix the o line and become a top 10 running team in the nfl and the team makes the playoffs with average qb play - homiedclown
If the OL would have been better in the Texan game who knows where we are today. Would EJ have been benched? Would the Bills have made the playoffs? Would Marrone still be here?
Still need a QB but if there isn't an OL in front of him nothing is going to matter |

I hate this "lateral movement" arguement. He left an organization that had little talent and a clueless owner. Sure, it isn't the best fit on some levels but is true for just about any hire. |

That would require a banner that reads:
Buffalo Sabres
Year XXXX
Stanley Cup Champions.
What I mean to say, is it's not satisfying at all, but it's not that big of a deal to me either. |

But I think that's other issue. Assuming the o line and running are attainable goals, (and I'm not claiming they are or aren't) could you say that what the bills have or the options they have is "average" qb play. Are we talking average strictly in terms of numbers or average as in "league average".
I can see why it's easy to get excited about the hire but imo it reminds me all too much of the 2011 sabres. Did basically everything to get the fanbase excited except address the core issue at centre. |

so many chances too
none recently though
I can't comment really on teams in the 70's
If the 79-80 team beats the islanders, they could have won one.
The 80-81 team laid an egg in the second rd vs the stars, great team.
The 82-83 team was peaking at the right time, til park fires a slapper in ot of game 7 in second rd, still biggest pain I felt as a sabres fan.
The 92-93 team will always be the what if team.
1996-01, who the hell knows.
The 2 years after the lockout.
11 legit chances since 79-80
The joy of a Buffalo fan

Hard to compare the two sports like that. But the 2011 Sabres needed more than a number 1 center.
The 2015 Bills have a championship caliber D. They have the playmakers on O just need a QB that can make some of the throws and a OL that can keep him on his feet |
