Right into the line of fire - ob18
Might as well see if he can be a good back up. If he can, maybe Emery gets you a 4th or 5th rounder for a team looking for goalie depth. |

Whenever he played, I saw more physical play than this laughable, nice, soft, great guy defense we have now... - CACannon18[/img]
I remember watching Manning as a Chilliwack Bruin a few years ago. He was the captain and leading scorer that game.
He had a rocket shot, a great skater, and got in a fight as well.
I remember saying to my son, that he looks like a sure fire NHLer.
I would love to see him given a bigger chance than a game once or twice a year. He might just be a great guy to have in the 5-6 position, at a low salary.
From hockey futures:
2010-11: Manning was in the New York Rangers training camp but not signed and returned to Chilliwack as a 20-year-old. Manning was the team captain and was a presence both on the scoreboard and physically for the Bruins. Despite appearing in just 53 games due to some nagging injuries and a seven-game suspension, Manning led Chilliwack defensemen in scoring with 21 goals and 32 assists and was -4 with 129 PMs. Chilliwack, after finishing third in the BC Division, again lost in a first round playoff series. Manning skated in all five playoff games and was -2 with 1 goal and 8 PMs. Philadelphia signed Manning to a three-year, entry-level contract in November 2010. |

Continuing to play him after the knee injury, especially since it flared up in the Washington game and again in practice, was an unnecessary risk. Related or not, the guy has been dealing with multiple, nagging injuries since late December.
7 straight games, with one day off during the stretch, with a guy dealing with a nagging issue is not smart. - Jsaquella
No, its not. Plus as anyone who has a nagging injury can attest, you start to move differently trying to not to put strain on the injured area, and end up over stressing and injuring another part of your body.

I think that was Seravalli's thoguth process behind sayign that the injuries could be related.
Even if they aren't, teh guy's been struggling with it for a few days at least, be careful with him |

Yep. Toronto media saying the Flyers are still looking for a goalie. Hell, even most of the bloggers who ripped the Mason addition and spoke of regression have at leas come around to viewing him as a solid starter, if not a "plus" starter. - Jsaquella
All Star Bob - 2.88 GAA - .914 save %
Mason - 2.46 GAA - .920 save %
Mason has better numbers than Rask, Hiller, Miller, Pavelec, Niemi to just name a few. But the Flyers need goaltending.

To be fair, I suspect Steve Stamkos doesn't care. He lights the Flyers up no matter who's in there. |

I heard Therien and Jackson say during the telecast Saturday the Schultz has been the teams best defenseman, I think Streit has been, but an argument can be made for Schultz. I think the expectations for Schultz coming out of training camp were zero. He's exceeded them exponentially. He's been pretty good.
That being said, the rest of the defense core has been so bad outside of Streit and Schultz, it's basically like being the tallest midget. - PLindbergh31
IMO, Schultz has been the better defenseman. Streit is great on the pp and solid offensively, but he is mediocre in his own zone.
Yup our best dman is a reclamation project signed to be our 7th man.

And what was the thought process that got him to claim Mason could have ripped the groin muscle off the bone?
Speaking of groins, somehow Jimmy Howard just tore his groin without any recent back injury to cause it. Almost like goalies can hurt themselves at any time even if they're 100% healthy. |

I was right behind Mason up on the second level. You could see him start to move left to right to defend the play then realized it was his own player who had the puck. So instead of following through with his move he kind of stopped, and I think in not completing the motion, he tweaked something. I could see it right away.

He does take the possibilities to the extreme, sure.
At the same time, I agree with the bulk of the article. The guy is your top goalie, his long term health is key. If he's dealing with nagging injuries in a lost season, there's no reason to overburden him in the midst of it |

you could add Coburn, he has just been having an awful season
Amac, Coburn, Luke (at times) and Read have all been pretty major disappointments this season. At times they look fine, but their gaffs really have been more consistent then their good moments. |

Who cares if the injuries are related.
If they are, which isn't unreasonable to assume, then it's not really much difference. The fact is, Mason got dinged up against Ottawa. He tweaked it against the Caps. He had to leave practice.
It's not as if he suddenly got hurt against the Bruins. He'd been dealing with some kind of leg injury for about a week. Related or unrelated to the back injury is immaterial |

Read and Coburn are really the only two guys I'd call major disappointments. The rest have more or less played as I expected them to play |

Its hilarious isn't it? His level of play shouldn't be completely shocking to us. He's played competent top 4 minutes in this league before. He is just so much steadier than our core of veterans we have locked up. These value guys are out there in free agency every year, not everyone is getting overpaid. Do some homework like Hexy did and you'll find them, its not some miracle work although a good deal. Any type of fear of shedding as much of this D as possible is totally unsubstantiated. I mean what will happen, they start winning games like the end of the lockout year when the starters went down? They are worse than the dog poop that's out there now? Oh my God we might be worse than this dog poop of season that's over in January....who gives a f# at least we shed the contracts.
No one is saying to expose the kids, but yes hire a mercenary group of D. |
