It blows my mind people think the offense will stay the same, while the team is committed to a much more solid defensive structure. The offense we had was because JVR and Kessel where on the blue line cheating and waiting for a 2 on 1
- walshyleafsfan

But with more commitment to defense from everybody, you can gain better puck possession in the defensive zone, and with more puck support your breakouts SHOULD be more effective and efficient with a higher chance for success. No more weak passes up the board to be picked off!!!

Sadly, the misguided souls that run the NHL don't award points for shots on goal.

Thank (frank) for that. The Leafs would be 60 points away from a playoff place now if that was the case. Used to love watching 48 shots against each game.

I'm not so convinced that a change in system will hurt Kessel so much.

A lot of his goals are generated from turnovers in the neutral zone - he pounces, the D is going the wrong way, and boom - he's behind them.

Heck, one could argue that "The Horachek Way" might actually help Phil's numbers.

Im not so sure about these 3 game stats

whats the stats on the 3 teams we played? are they heavy shot teams?

I just dont see holding the Kings and Jackets to low shot totals a big deal

the 3rd game vs the Caps we got trashed 6-2

the SJ game coming up, if they can do it vs the Sharks then ill buy in

No most of Kessels goals come from cheating up the ice waiting on stretch passes for either a two on one or going down the right side for a wrister. Don't know where you get these neutral zones turnovers from.

Speaking of SJ... Getting a bit sick of the media lumping them in with The other 3 teams on this trip as elite... They are not. Rise same wins and points as Leafs have lost 9 of 11.

The B's have been pretty beat up this season. Once they find their groove they should climb the standings not drop down.

Looking at the standings, I don't see much of a chance of making the playoffs. I don't think we can realistically say the Leafs will beat any of the teams they will battle with.

It also appears they can draft no better than 6th. They won't slip behind Edmonton,AZ,Buffalo, Carolina, NJY. They could easily draft as high as 14th.

So... splitting the difference, I would see them drafting 10th.

With that in mind, what I want to see for the rest of the season is players buy into a more consistent defensive scheme, a "culture change" on the ice if you will.

I also think the losing needs to continue at a fairly healthy clip. There is almost 0 chance of McDavid in our future but the losing is necessary so that management actually tries to dump bad salary and doesn't compound their mistakes by doing something stupid like 5.5 for 6 or 8 years for Franson.

Bottom line... We should be OK with losing, as long as something actually changes.

Instead, they'll draft 13th and make no sigificant changes. It's how they roll.
