No most of Kessels goals come from cheating up the ice waiting on stretch passes for either a two on one or going down the right side for a wrister. Don't know where you get these neutral zones turnovers from. - LeafMan
I thought your job was to rag on Phaneuf.

Sadly, the misguided souls that run the NHL don't award points for shots on goal. - Aetherial
True, but if we assume Sv% to be relatively constant per goalie, and goals against being equal to shots against x Sv%, then I think it's pretty hard to argue that we're not better off with fewer shots against... |

Looking at the standings, I don't see much of a chance of making the playoffs. I don't think we can realistically say the Leafs will beat any of the teams they will battle with.
It also appears they can draft no better than 6th. They won't slip behind Edmonton,AZ,Buffalo, Carolina, NJY. They could easily draft as high as 14th.
So... splitting the difference, I would see them drafting 10th.
With that in mind, what I want to see for the rest of the season is players buy into a more consistent defensive scheme, a "culture change" on the ice if you will.
I also think the losing needs to continue at a fairly healthy clip. There is almost 0 chance of McDavid in our future but the losing is necessary so that management actually tries to dump bad salary and doesn't compound their mistakes by doing something stupid like 5.5 for 6 or 8 years for Franson.
Bottom line... We should be OK with losing, as long as something actually changes.
Instead, they'll draft 13th and make no sigificant changes. It's how they roll. - Aetherial
I don't disagree with a thing you've written here, but I will admit it's kinda hard to read with tears streaming down my face. |

assumptive on your part - Dozzer
I guess so, but If I were to target a team to drop out of it in the East it wouldn't be Boston. Same as when LA was sitting in 7th out west. I'd target Winnipeg and Vancouver as teams that could drop out in the west. |

After Ek kept redirecting my iPad to the Frankbook of Sex website, I came to the conclusion he will do anything for $.
Be vigilant.

Of course, they're being coached differently so the play will change. My point is that how a team approaches the defensive zone play doesn't necessarily have to change how they approach their o-zone play. The best teams are ones who play good, strong, defensively strong hockey coupled with smart, fluid offensive hockey that plays to their forward's strengths. If that's grind, then sure. If it's a bit looser, fine, just make sure that you're ready to get your ass back and cover if needed. - lumlums
I don't think their points were coming from solid O-Zone play. They were coming off the fast break, mostly because the forwards cheat on D. It is not like we have guys who go into the corner and dig out the puck and excel at cycling it down low.
So, when they stop cheating on D, they are exposed as a mediocre offensive team also.

over the long haul the leafs will come out better if they can keep the shots at 30 or under.
leafs have 7 goals on 84 shots or 8.33 sh% ...which is about NHL avg.
Its the sh% against that is not sustainable...
small steps...but did anyone think this group of players was capable of playing 3 games in a row and avg 22 shots? - senstroll
I would like to see them go down the road of improving as a 2-way team. I just don't think we can conclude they will be better. They have never shown that they have a good enough offense when they aren't cheating on D.
It may be that they play .500 hockey, more or less consistently as opposed to the offense heating up and they go 6 and 2, then it cools off and they go 2 and 6.
L.A. is playing horribly, and yeah, they held them to 20 shots, but they only got 19 and 0 goals themselves. I am afraid that will be the shape of things to come.
... which may just lead to the team abandoning the whole idea of defense, again.
