most expected the team would make an effort the first 5-6 games, no? the fear was things will be back to normal after that - Symba007
That fear is compounded by the reality that they may not see much in the way of actual results in the standings.

ya my concern is they lose to LA and ANA playing " the right way" and the core says hey we beat both these teams playing "our way" (frank) this. |

If the Leafs miss the playoffs, it doesn't matter where they draft. Shanny will give his old League pal Gary the shakedown and the Buds will win the "closed door" lottery.
Can't wait for Bill to hold up that beautiful blue and white Maple Leaf on his cute little card |

I'm not really worried.

Nonsense. If the Leafs made the playoffs every year, the revenues would be through the roof. More so than tossing McDavid in Arizona and hoping that all 4 Coyotes fans tell all their friends |

Exactly.
Change the system, change the players that need to be changed. - Aetherial
The player change will come, eventually.
All the can do now is work on the system. Something that actually looked like it was starting to come to fruition last night. |

Nope.
The room for potential growth in Arizona massively outweighs the benefits of having the Leafs win the cup.
One has the potential to be a long-term fix, the other is just bolstering what already isn't broken. |

I would be surprised if Arizona didn't win the lottery, just like when the Untited Center was half full, Chicago moved up 5 places in the draft for the #1 pick, just like the Pepsi Center numbers dwindling in Colorado and boom, they get the first pick. Pattern? Could be Carolina in that mix as well. Oh and the struggling Pens attendance and they got... |

Pretty much it.
Of course, I have no idea how it is good for the league to have all the 1st overalls go to Edmonton.

Mathew Barzal Profile
description=
Mathew Barzal
Ht/Wt: 5'11"/174 lbs
Position: C
Team: Seattle (WHL)
Mathew Brazal's Player Profile
Mathew Barzal is that Sam Reinhart (Buffalo – 2014 – 2nd overall) type thinker that outthinks his opposition. Mathew also possesses elite passing and stickhandling abilities. Mathew had a good Ivan Hlinka tournament where he helped bring the gold back to Canada with seven points and a plus five rating in five games. He also is looking good out of the gate in the WHL with eleven points in ten games.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers - updated Oct. 19th
Difference maker may sum up Mathew. He not only wants to be one, he is one. Always in the 'guts' of the action and he has the puck so much during the course of a game. Smart and really understands what is unfolding and is both quick to take advantage yet patient to let it unfold. Exudes confidence and with a very good skill set, that confidence leads to productivity, both for him and the team.
Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th
Future Considerations
A smart, creative player with a wide, strong, fluid stride…plays a 200-foot game…makes good decisions with the puck…has decent strength, and looks bigger than listed…shows flashes of dominating offensive skills, but need to do so with more consistency…not overly physical, but will engage in contact for the puck…shows his creativity, vision and playmaking ability on the power play…finds seams and open ice with his impressive senses...really doing well in his rookie WHL season…has high-end offensive NHL upside. (August 2014)

Carolina projected to finish 4th in points gives them about a 9% shot at first overall.
According to mathematicians, anyway.

It is going to be boring hockey to watch but the goals/shots against will be cut down which is good but as I said, the make up of the forwards on this team will have trouble grinding out goals for wins, they just can't do that. I'm just cautioning everyone that the loses will pile up, for those that think losing is fine for the purpose of tanking, they will be happy with this team. - LeafMan
To me, this type of hockey isn't boring when you generate some goals. We fell behind 1-0, if we scored the first goal things would've been different. The Kings play stifling hockey. Not all teams do. Example: The Columbus game wasn't boring playing defensive hockey.
It's also a transition for the Leafs to this new style. The fact that they've already cut the shots way down in just three games to me says this team will get the offense going. I'm encouraged that we're doing this now, I think we'll all be impressed when the wins start coming. |

I hope that the players understand that this half of the season is essentially a tryout for the 2015-2016 maple-leafs, and that individual effort and willingness to play a defensively minded game trumps team results for now. |
