JvR was streaky as hell back then, and not a very competitive player without the puck (he's still not, lol).

With that said, I really doubt they would have looked to move him if he had been signed to a cheaper bridge deal a la Coots/Schenn, instead of that ill-timed monster 2nd-contract.

Matt Read's emergence out of left field probably played into it somewhat, as well.

What young player entering the league isn't streaky? He spent three seasons in his still young career here. If anyone ever doubted his ability, you should never scout young talent. JvR is a pretty aggressive Penalty killer for the leafs and money in a shootout opportunity. JvR is actually better then Wayne Simmonds.

Yeah, young players are streaky, and not all growth is linear. Case in point, B Schenn + Couturier.

Like I said, tho... if he didn't get that gift of an extension from Homer, he's probably still a Flyer and Luke Schenn's probably a Ranger or something.
